Mirella R (ru) wrote: It was just OK. A little funny but most of it was not very believable.

Marischa B (es) wrote: Yet another Freddie Prinze Jnr-lead teen romance comedy about two college students, Alec (Prinze Jnr) and Imogen (Julia Stiles, Save The Last Dance) who fall in love, and experience the highs and lows of being in a serious relationship. The good stuff: Unique and refreshing editing, Julia Stiles. The bad stuff: Freddie Prinze Jnr... he's a very ordinary actor, the plot... 100% unoriginal and not very engaging. Overall, I wouldn't say this is a bad movie, but it's not 'good' in any sense of the term and is ultimately completely forgettable.

Joe T (br) wrote: The start was promising and the end was good - but the middle really dragged most of the time with no direction.

David S (ca) wrote: Beloved by many, apparently, but I found it cold and uninvolving. There is craft in the scenes, particularly in a sequence where many of the men of a town are being arrested. But the title character appears onscreen only when dead, so the film must be about something else. Turns out, as the last forty-five minutes seem to indicate, the film is about collusion and corruption. What that didn't change, even in retrospect, was the success of the film itself.

sabrina i (it) wrote: Dick Powell is great in this little seen noir. The film itself is a good example of the genre. No happy ending. No easy resolutions. Powell's character gets himself into a sticky situation with no way to go but down. The story is standard fare but it's this character that is the focus of attention here and gives the film an compelling edge. Here's a man who has everything - a nice house, a decent job and wife and kids. He risks it all by starting an affair. He wasn't satisfied with his life but like every noir - a little mistake is a heavy price to pay. The film lacks suspense or surprises but if you are looking for good performances and an intriguing character study - this film makes a good watch.

N M (de) wrote: At a running time of 2 1/2 hrs. this trip into the 70's California hippy , drug culture by way of a rambling private eye story is way too long. Given Joaquin Phoenix's often strange behavior his casting as the lead is perfect as he probably just had to show up on set. Reminds me of The Big Sleep in that there is a huge cast of eccentric characters and most of the plot remains unresolved. Lots of star cameos. The movie is most notable for reminding everyone that the 70's was the worst decade for fashion and popular culture and that it was still possible to live in a cheap shack by the beach.

Eric K (au) wrote: Very action packed - good for the Adrenaline junkie. The fight scenes are great as well. Not very many slow parts which is nice.
