Enjoyed Miles Teller in Whiplash and he plays a similar character in this movie, a driven man who will risk everything for his goals and his profession.

Brooks C (ru) wrote: If I were to describe Angel Sanctuary in one fell swoop to anybody who has watched anime for many years and are familiar with the aspects of rebellion and self-discovery, he/she would probably yawn and turn away. Such a description pretty much sums up this 3 episode OVA in a nutshell. I'll admit that I know nothing about the manga, but having watched this atrocity I can safely say that I probably won't know anything more. The main problem that I have with this anime is not so much the fact that it's as short as it is, but how incoherently it tries to tell a "complex", albeit stupid storyline in the span of an hour in a half. The plot of "Angel Sanctuary" centers on a high school prodigy named Setsuna. He has it rough with others because of his romantic lust for his biological sister, Sara. After walking his sister home and having been in a fight with some of his peers he encounters two women from the Netherworld who try to convince him that he possesses the spirit of Organic Angel Alexiel, a divine being who rebelled against God and is the sister/supposed romantic interest of one of his pursuers, Rosiel. Reluctant to accept his condition, Setsuna then becomes framed for the murder of one of his classmates and is pursued by both Heaven and the law. Understanding that his mother has nothing to do with him and that Sara is about to go to England with her to marry an overseas businessman-whose name and character is never disclosed-Setsuna tries to win her back and fulfill the duties of Alexiel. When talking about an anime with such a dubious reputation one can't help but to touch upon the very aspect that has everyone who has seen this OVA talking: the incestuous relationship between the two main characters: Setsuna and Sara. I'm sure that anyone who has read my outline could probably picture most, if not all the problems in this OVA. Though since this is my review, I'll add my personal spin on this matter. The more inquisitive readers that are more open minded to any kind of story are probably asking themselves: Is it an innovative, new take on telling a story? Is it relevant to the character and story development? Is it allusive to any piece of classic, mythological literature? Is it used as a manipulative plot-device? Could be a form of symbolism? My answer to all those questions is: no.This subplot is about as tacked on as Sleepy's redeemable character trait in "Mad Bull 34" and serves as much relevance to the story as Chris being half-Caucasian in the notoriously bad Tomino OVA "Garzey's Wing". The very incorporation of this most useless, albeit rebellious subplot has perhaps given this OVA just as bad, if not worse of a reputation than "Ninja Resurrection's" successful attempt at buying off the success of the classic "Ninja Scroll" to dup fans of the movie into thinking that it was a sequel, when it was something entirely different. I must confess that I have acclaimed certain movies that have incorporated such a theme-the works of Chan-Wook Park being one example-but what separates those from this one is that they had stories and successfully attempted trying new and revolutionary ways of telling complex stories. I don't mind a rebellious streak in certain movies as long as there's a plot to hold it in, but in "Angel Sanctuary's" case there is none. The plot to this OVA is stupid and very uninspired. I understand that it's difficult to condense character and story development into such a limited time span, but there have been some that did well in doing so. Some examples are: "Cyber City Oedo 808", "Blue Submarine No. 6", "Orguss 02", "Macross Plus", and "FLCL". A plot like this begs to be told in a more lengthier time span, but given the fact that I cared nothing for what was going on, nor the characters I probably would fall asleep midway. For what is presented, we get hardly any back-story to Setsuna and Sara. We don't understand why they share their love interest, or why we should like them at all. My own personal take on "Angel Sanctuary's" story is that it's BORING.Another thing that really perplexes me is the voice acting. As much as I loved "Pokemon" as a kid and Crispin Freeman as Togusa in the "Ghost in the Shell" franchise, Aumon in "Witch Hunter Robin", and Tsume in "Wolf's Rain", these same actors have sunk to an all-new low when it comes down to English voiceover dubbing. It may be different on the Japanese version, I can't comment on that, but given how uninspiring and dull the story is I won't even bother. Most of the actors sound bored and especially the voice actor for Setsuna. I'm still a fan of Freeman and have a desire to check out "Hellsing", but he's not good here as Rosiel. Some may be wondering what may possibly redeem this anime. Well, I have to admit that the art and animation are quite nice and the attention to detail is rather impressive. The music is just there and is nothing special.I know that I've said many times before that I love anime and have expressed immense admiration for it. I've always loved how much it tries to throw at the viewer and how it offers all of these new, unique, and creative ways of developing imaginative worlds and telling animated stories. That being said, I don't want to give the impression that I think that everything Japan has done in the genre is a masterpiece. There is bad anime out there and "Angel Sanctuary" is one of them. Whether one has a religious background or not it can be said that the nonsensical, underdeveloped narrative of "Angel Sanctuary" is a serious downgrade. To make matters worse, like "Ninja Resurrection" this show also ends on a cliffhanger. By the end, I just flat-out didn't care about these rebels without a cause. This whole anime was nothing short of boring and stupid. I'd probably get more thrills watching paint dry, while watching all the greatest directors of anime and Asian cinema working on their taxes. In short, don't bother with this anime, don't buy it, don't watch it, "Angel Sanctuary" sucks.

It's one of those movies that's got three or four different stories which are told, in this movie, by Vincent Price, who plays a vampire. Plus, there's some really cool Halloween music from a couple of bands that perform in the movie as well. And, I loved the ending!

The mockery of fascism, the boyhood fantasies, the simple country life. It has everything not least of all an eternal beauty. Obviously he loved his childhood and memory has a way of smoothing off the rough edges if this is the case. Fellini does this and puts it on screen as only a master artist could.
