(it) wrote: An empty and silly exercise in cheap exploitation with unfunny attempts at humor and a stupid plot that is preposterous even for a film that is not supposed to be taken seriously - which makes me think that sometimes a fake trailer should just remain that.

(kr) wrote: the film was a cookie-cutter genre film about the "world of a competitive sport" (i.e. bring it on, stick it, and any high school "football" movie you can imagine - except that it was about marching bands ... which in my opinion made it unintentionally hilarious.
(jp) wrote: The story is fairly dull, and the characters often unappealing but it is the technique which matters here. It is very complicated and was filmed 15 times, and Figgis chose the best version for release. I most enjoyed realising when characters moved from one quarter of the screen to another or briefly appeared in two points of view. The planning needed to execute that impresses me more than some effects shot in a blockbuster. There are some amusing characters too. The film clearly doesn't take itself seriously. Sands is good as a masseur, and the guy doing the pitch with his keyboard is funny too. I think this was a worthwhile experiment.

(ag) wrote: A way to long film of the fight to establish the nation of Israel. Skrimish fighting makes for some mildly interesting combat. If you like Hebrew, watch this film. Otherwise, try to ignore the dialog. The scenes with Sinatra, although very few, are token at best. Yul Brenner does an admirable job as always as the closest thing to a military mind at the time. John Wayne, the blow hard as always, thinks he's still in The Longest Day. A valiant effort to capture the thrilling days of yesteryear, this is more a narrative of our foreign involvement in other peoples business that has torn America apart for nearly a century.
