(fr) wrote: Kind of an entirely unique blend of Saw, Fight Club and Urban Legends: The Final Cut, I thought it unfortunate that Dread could only have worked in the sickening way that it was made. WIthout the disgust, gore and brutality, it would have not been such an amazing film. Unfortunately, its presence also means that there are plenty of viewers out there who wouldn't have the stomach for such a thing. As such, I'm very happy to talk up Dread, it is, after all a fantastic movie, but I can't recommend it in general.Particularly good production given its status as a B-Movie; though Jackson Rathborne (The Last Airbender, The Twilight Saga, S. Darko, Big Stan) in the lead as Stephen Grace (above) is perhaps to passive and weak in what should have been a better role.Given that this is director Anthony DiBlasi's debut, and it was such a powerful film, I'd say that we can expect great things from the kid.Much less empty than the cheap torture porn we've come to expect from the recent B failures of American "horror" like Captivity and Amusement. Though it does differ quite greatly from the Books of Blood short story upon which Dread is based, given that it needs to make the effort to stretch to almost two hours running time, the way in which it spreads the story through its characters is terribly effective, more so perhaps even than the book itself.People have complained about how slow the movie is to start up, but (and I know I've brought this up on more than one occasion before) I personally don't think there's anything wrong with a bit of fucking exposition and character development. Dread is not "pleasant", but it is pretty damn good! The concept is intriguing and superbly executed, if you're one with no problem for stomaching the typical R18+ horror then I would say to you to most certainly watch Dread! On a cool extra little side-note; there's posters advertising both Amanda Palmer and The Dresden Dolls!76%-Gimly
