Stuart K (kr) wrote: After being stuck in the View Askewniverse since 1994, Kevin Smith decided it was time for something completely different for his next film. By that, he wanted to do a more commercial film, featuring non of the characters that had frequented his previous films from Clerks (1994) to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), it's not as bad as critics say actually. Ollie Trink (Ben Affleck) works for Public Relations in New York, but when his wife Gertrude (Jennifer Lopez) dies during childbirth, his life collapses around him. He loses his job, and has to move back in with his father Bart (George Carlin). 7 years later, his daughter Gertie (Raquel Castro) is in Elementary School, and Ollie works is working on the streets, but still trying to get back into public relations, his old friend Arthur (Jason Biggs) tries to set up interviews. However, when Ollie meets video store clerk Maya (Liv Tyler), his life seems to take a change for the better, or will it?? Critics hated this film at the time, audiences stayed away too. It had a troubled production too, delayed due to the negative publicity surrounding "Bennifer". But, it's not as bad as they say, true it is sentimental. But Smith clearly made the film he had envisioned, it was very personal to him.

Richard D (jp) wrote: A multi-director comedy anthology film that really has no overarching structure to it. When it's firing on all cylinders, it's really funny. Like most of these films, it's very uneven, and the unfunny stuff is pretty dire. With few exceptions, the Joe Dante and Carl Gottlieb material is superb, but not the rest. John Landis's segments (except for the ones featuring Don "No Soul" Simmons) demonstrate just how far he slid after the early 80's.

Carl G (br) wrote: This film fails as horror and comedy. It doesn't build any tension throughout it's bloated runtime and fails to amuse you with the ridiculous premise. The acting is dire as the unlikable characters make increasingly stupid decisions that somehow work out for them. I found myself rooting for all of the "good guys" to be murdered in horribly violent ways and was often disappointed by the conventional deaths. The film does use some brave camera work, including continuous takes that breach the 1 minute mark in a few scenes. The gory effects are also interesting, although they tend towards bare shock factor rather than realism. The only reason that you'd want to watch this would be out of a morbid curiosity to see if it is "so bad it's good". Maybe if you were drunk enough it would hit that category but for me it was just so bad that it's bad.
