It's a story about childhood, tragedy and an unutterable struggle against circumstance and surrounding before your life has barely begun. This is not a film that roars though, on the contrary it is a very quiet piece with a wistful message. Lynne Ramsey's directorial approach is seemingly non-obtrusive, capturing a naturalism of the child actors that some film makers could only dream of. There are moments that are incredibly bleak, but a melancholic tenderness prevails. The dream like quality as main protagonist James escapes his rat-infested urban home and escapes to the countryside are some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful scenes I have ever witnessed on film. As he runs out into golden fields, encompassing a little boy who is holding onto his childhood with fingertips...

(ag) wrote: I bought this cheap and expected a bit of the ol' "stupid people getting killed nastily"... And that's what I got! A bit slow in the start, and overall, the gap between the graphic killings is a bit too big for it's own good, since the movie itself is not worth much credits. The ending is great though, and the theft from "Psycho" is hilarious!
(kr) wrote: It's pretty important to the development of Italian gothic horror movies of the 1960s. Antonio Margheriti did in only 2 weeks. What's kin dof funny is that it claims to be based on an Edgar Allen Poe story called Danse Macabre, but no such story exits. Edgar Allen Poe is in it as a character, though. In the early 1970s, Margheritit remade this movie as Web of the Spider. An infierior version with Klaus Kinski as Poe.
