Through flashbacks with Carroll (played by Ian Holm) and in twisted fantasy sequences featuring creations from the Jim Henson Creature Shop, Alice slowly comes to terms with something she never realized before -- that Carroll loved her. And I don't mean the way a father loves a daughter. The film explores the romantic obsession Carroll harbored for the little girl, which is apparently documented in some of the author's letters to family members. The subject is treated with subtlety and taste, but the movie has a hard time shaking its persistently sleepy atmosphere and languid pacing.

There's nothing ground-breakingly original about the plot but the performances are so spot on and the feelings so heartfelt that it's impossible not to be carried along. The first half hour or so in particular is excellent, it shows a real love for cycling and is very funny. It's a wonder that Dennis Christopher didn't go on to more acting success because he's truly spot on here and his relationship with his family is what really engages. Brilliant.

(us) wrote: Ugh. I don't know why I've watched this film series. You would think when you get a variety of horror directors in one film to direct a bunch of shorts, how could this turn out bad. Well, although there's a small spark on ingenuity in the concept, this overall feature will leave you cold
