A Few Kilos of Dates for a Funeral

The film is set around three protagonists. Two run a gas station on the outskirts of town, on a road that gets next to no traffic anymore, and so they get next to no customers. They live and work out of a decrepit van on site, its windows covered in plastic. Sadry is a former strongman, now blind in one eye. He is the boss of the station. Yadi is his eager to please assistant, who usually annoys more than pleases. Finally there is the postman, Abbas, who longs to trade in his break-less bicycle for a motorcycle, while he must care for his mentally ill brother.

David L (nl) wrote: If you go down to the woods today, you'll be sure of a big surprise, and funnily enough this film was quite surprising in the sense that it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Still bad, but could of potentially been a lot worse. For starters there appears to be a lot of realistic footage, which I hadn't assumed would be the case. I was expecting a gigantic beast of a bear that only reveals close ups of its eyes and claws, so as not to reveal the poor computer generated monster that is the star of this flick. The real life footage does make it look less menacing than it perhaps needs to be for a film dubbed as a horror, but the simple presence of a bear in any case is enough to be terrified by. The main concept of the film is simply how the four teens are going to escape the ravenous creature as it contains them within their broken down car as a means of revenge for the killing its 'mate'. Aside from this, there is a lot of character development as we learn more about the internal dynamics and relationships within the group, as well as coping with the threat from outside. It's as much an emotional battle with one another as a physical one with the zoo animal. It's an interesting little story that has some nice moments but it's clearly very low budget and comes across as more a hardcore showing of Home and Away that cinematic material. Exceeded my expectations but they were never set very high in the first place, and although I give it a half hearted thumbs up, it's a thumbs down to watching it again.

Fred V (gb) wrote: After coming close to shutting this film off merely 25 minutes in, I struggled through the next 40, only to shut it off for good 1 hour and 5 minutes into the 106 minute runtime of this disastrous film. Poor casting, bland humour, and a whole host of ridiculous scenes make this film excruciatingly boring to watch. It's hard to care about anything that's at stake, and the childish attempts at humour don't work when this film isn't trying to be like Johnny English (2003). Give this a miss!

Robin T (ca) wrote: Powerful personal account of one couple's experience living through Hurricane Katrina which was only the beginning of their struggles. This film is a stark testament to how the government was so out of touch with the needs of their constituents. Film of the water's rising and the 911 callers who were told help was not coming. One women said I'm sitting in my atic and the water is still rising. I am going to die. The operator just says, "yes." Even after the storm, the National Guard didn't come around to the ninth ward to look for bodies. When a group of displaced residents requested they be taken in at a military base, they were threatened and guns were drawn. We live in a rich country and could have done a much better job responding to this disaster. Japan's response to their earthquake and tsunami put us to shame.
