Tanvir M (mx) wrote: After watching a series of extremely gritty offering from Asia, this was a gentle palate cleanser in its quiet beauty. A long journey of making a dictionary is made compelling in this gem of a film. In an era where instant gratification is the norm, what does it mean to commit professionally to something essential but non glamorous? This film answers this in the best possible way. No wonder it swept the Japanese Academy awards and was Japan's submission to the Oscars. Highly recommended.

Jamin M (fr) wrote: 101 Dalmatians is Disney movie that I don't think is that great, but there are things I really like. The animation is pretty good and the characters are likeable. I loved that they really managed to animate all those spots. The story doesn't have as much charm as something like Lady and the Tramp, but it's fine. I absolutely love dogs. The puppies are soooo cute. I didn't want to see those precious little dears get hurt. I enjoy Pongo and Perdita's determination to get their puppies back, and I like Sergeant Tibs. Jasper and Horace are entertaining bubbling sidekicks. But we all know the redeeming factor of the film is Cruella DeVil. She is so dang entertaining. She's so crazy, funny and and so freaking determined to get those puppies. I love her design and the voice acting for her is spot on. The climax of the movie is really fun with this crazy car chase. I guess the major problems I have with the film are that while I do like Pongo and Perdita, I don't find them as engaging as Lady and Tramp, and as I've stated, the story isn't as charming as Lady and the Tramp's. 101 Dalmatians isn't phenomenal, but with good animation, adorable puppies, a fun villain, and good sense of adventure, 101 Dalmatians is a cute, charming Disney classic. l'm happy to own it on Platinum Edition.

Tim S (gb) wrote: Kevin Smith followed his indie success Chasing Amy with Dogma, a chance to not only take a stab at Christianity, but also to honor it. The film really stands out in his body of work and isn't his typical fare. It's sort of whimsical and Wizard of Oz-ish, but also very much sounds like something he's had a hand in. As far as content and storyline goes, it's unique among the features he's done before or since. Visually, it looks phenomenal. Shot in widescreen, we're treated to some very nice camera work and some wonderul visuals. As far as the cast goes, everyone shines - particularly Alan Rickman. I believe that his performance along with the lovely score of Howard Shore elevated the film well above the level of a typical low brow comedy. Ben Affleck, Linda Fiorentino and Jason Mewes also give excellent solid performances. The only downside was that the film just wasn't the vision Kevin ultimately had in mind. Not that I'm insinuating that any changes would improve the film, but it's a shame that he didn't get to make the film he set out to make in the first place. I'm sure he doesn't see it that way, and it could've been either better or worse, but we'll never know. What he was able to achieve is not to be overlooked in the least. I really enjoy Dogma, and I'm happy that he got to make it at all.
