A Missed Fortune
Shemp wins $50,000 in a radio contest and the stooges move into the Hotel Costa Plente where they live it up and wreck their fancy suite. While they wait for the prize money to arrive, the boys are pursued by three gold-digging dames after their winnings. When the check arrives however, it's only for $4.85 after tax deductions.

Shot on beautiful high-definition video, this caustically funny and terrific adaptation of Stephen Belber's play is centralized in one grimy Michigan motel room where three characters, played by Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard and Uma Thurman--all bringing their A-games---reopen old wounds about a date rape. The fallout of the single event plays out in a matter of minutes but the effects will leave you shaken.

One of the most important scenes is when we find out the nature of Drew's true character. Will Mandy will do sexual stuff with him or will she go home and confess to her dad that she's been lying to him all day??? From the skipping in the DVD, it really looked like Drew turned out to be a creep and Mandy did the right thing by walking away. But then the movie takes a turn for the worse because it really looks like Mandy never confessed her lies to her dad and then at the end she lets Drew put a crown on her. It really makes no sense unless Drew's character turned out to be good after all. I was extremely angry at Mandy for continually lying to her father... who cares if he is controlling and possessive? You need to respect and obey him and gain his trust by proving your character. GAH. Little teenie boppers will go nuts for this movie but to me, it was just lame. There were some really good moments, but they were all with the dad's character and his little nephew and sister.

(ru) wrote: Wow. Grim, indeed. The acting is atrocious. Ferrigno and relatively unknown actor Nemes were the best performers of the bunch. Van Dien has the skill and delivery of William Shatner which wasn't remotely appropriate for his role. The sets and/or script were not thought out clearly -- for example, the "Mirror, mirror on the wall" is not, in fact, on the wall -- which is painfully obvious during the recitation of the famous incantation.Locations were overused with lazy camera work. The opening scene's fairlyland throne room is shot in the de-consecrated St. Vibiana's Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles, which has since been turned into an event venue for public hire. Camera angles are needlessly shot upward repeatedly showing the event lighting machines in the rafters, utterly destroying the illusion of fairlyland. Poor attention to detail by the director. On the other hand, the story is innovative and interesting, even if the dialogue is stupid. The lighting is fascinating throughout, although that may be more by happenstance than design. The use of CGI was impressive for what appears to be a small budget film. And it is nice to see Dylan Vox involved in a project that doesn't boarder on porn or late night Logo fare. For a junk movie, it's pretty well done -- but it's still firmly in the "junk" movie category.

Scoring a whopping 0 out of 4 on the scary scale, 2 for 4 on funny, and only one, creative diamond in the rough to really recommend (it's called 'Parallel Monsters' and I'm sure you could find it somewhere online) My honest suggestion would be just to watch V/H/S 2 again, and again, and again until the tape wears out.
