Ali K (jp) wrote: Ghobadi, has opted for cinematic poetry, rather than dramatic story telling. it's not meaning he's looking for. but an expression. and the result is a monumental achievement in that regard. Not every political prisoner turns out to be another Mandala. Most of them are like this: burnt, broken, and barren.

Sergio R (mx) wrote: From the very first five minutes, Phie Ambo immerses the audience into the world of a tortured mind; a small child unwilling to even consider the possibility of being in an elevator, and an insistent yet patient mental-health practitioner treading through a pure and simple fear. The documentary touched every emotional chord possible in the audience, creating a perpetual "poor child" intuition on the audience, again on the first five minutes. Then Ambo immediately transfers that same sympathy to an older man, from the appearance rugged, anxious, and to some, automatically dangerous. Ambo was not only able to snapshot Dr. Davidson's research, but just as importantly transferred our sympathy from a child to a man, knowing perfectly well that most people would not even consider a tear from an adult struggling with it's own fears.

Stuart M (gb) wrote: It's hard to see what they were trying to do here. Meryl Streep is absolutely flawless in the lead, and Jim Broadbent is also excellent as her somewhat comical husband. But there is less than nothing to the film. It has no real plot and hasn't dramatized anything at all except the Alzheimer sequences that take up a disproportionate amount of time. Seriously, there is no context or background given for anything so somebody not up to date on her time as prime minister couldn't possibly learn anything from it. One shouldn't need crib notes before watching a film. Even those who know more or less what happened will simply find themselves watching brief five-minute long highlights from her time in office. The same could have been done using film clips and been made a documentary, except then it would have to actually explain things. At the end of the day the film has no core and tells us nothing about anything. A real waste of a masterful performance.
