Selim, a young man adrift, is a transvestite and a prostitute who desperately longs for his father's love. Omar, his father, lives a secluded life of grief and has never recovered from the loss of his wife. Like two lonely ships, they pass silently without ever really connecting. I found it to be incredibly moving how these extreme fundamentalist parents, who grew up going to church and being told that being gay was an abomination, then were (mostly) able to go on and accept their own gay children. It amazing to me how so many Christians interpret the Bible literally. Not being a religious person myself, I really just found this documentary fascinating. There really are so many prejudiced people out there, it's so sad. Anyways, this is a really interesting documentary.

Len W (mx) wrote: The critics are so wrong on this movie! It is stunningly good. Will Smith is amazing at holding his normal exuberance in check throughout the whole film, and to great effect once the entire purpose of his plot is known at the end of the movie. Rosario Dawson is brilliant in an understated way. The love story between the 2 characters is portrayed in such a delicate and intense manner, and with such taste as to be astounding. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Do NOT believe the critics' low scores and complaints. It's a huge departure from Smith's usual bombastic roles, and while the subject matter is grim, it also contains an aesthetic of such a high band wave that it will probably be missed by many people who are simply looking to be "entertained." I'm in awe of the script, the acting, sound track and editing. Highly recommended.

Juli N (ag) wrote: The film is about Obsession not sex! Unsimulated sex is rampant, but after awhile it loses it's allure and even the voyeurs among us wish they'd take a break! That is the point when we see it for what it truly is... an obsession! This is when the story got real, and stopped being a masterbationary masterpiece and turned into an art house film!Based on a true story about an incident that took place in 1936 Japan! The funny thing about this is Japan doesn't censor gory, bloody, graphic violence and serves it up on a silver platter on a regular basis but god forbid if a film depicts unsimulated sex or a male penis that's instant ban material! Thankfully Oshima found a French partner otherwise this film would never have seen the light of day!I applaud the film for simply existing!

Jason T (es) wrote: A slow moving crime drama that would have benefited from a different director and better script. The acting is fine and great cast but the movie was very involving and poor pacing.
