(es) wrote: Although the performances were not what I would say extremely bad, the movie was almost a direct copy of The Shining just done poorly enough to be done by a 12 year old writer/director... Another one to avoid...

(us) wrote: Ace cinematographer John Bailey made his dramatic feature directorial debut with this film (he's previously directed a film version of a Lily Tomlin one woman show. "China Moon" is a throwback to noir films of old, with police detective Ed Harris becoming ensnared in a web of murder and lust by femme fetal Madeleine Stowe. There's not a lot of original to the story and it's pretty slow moving, but the film's noiry style and the strong cast, which includes a young Benicio Del Toro and also Charles Dance, are enough to carry the film. I've never been a big Madeline Stowe fan, so I wonder if I'd have liked this film better if there's been someone else in her role, like Jennifer Connolly or Diane Lane.

Armed with a witty script and lead by stellar performances by Malcolm McDowell, David Warner, and then up-and-comer Mary Steenburgen, Meyer created a film that charms and entertains without settling for overstated special effect goofiness--a dying breed of film in the mainstream cinema. There have been many great time-travel themed films in the 100+ years of motion picture, but this one still remains my favorite.
