It even has Jake Busey and Dominique Swain for those looking for an actor they recognise. Sure they are B or lower level actors but you'll probably recognise them.Seriously, this film isn't all that bad. Is it 3 star good? Probably not, but seeing as how I've seen it twice now and I'd be willing to watch it again... I had to give it an extra star simply for being that surprised by how entertained I was.

I think this movie can still appeal as a "forbidden love to the nth degree" saga. The stoic-yet-romantically adventurous queen breaks the barriers her country has set from the film's very beginning with her royal anti-war decree. Then, her forbidden love affair with a Spanish envoy (played by silent film star John Gilbert, who was notoriously shunned by movie studios in the early days of the talkies, despite actually being a decent enough actor, in my opinion) plays out with the disapproval of all of Sweden. It's interesting to watch the bizarre beginnings of this romance blossom, with Gilbert meeting Garbo's character dressed as a boy as she strays away from her throne to get away from it all and not be recognized. Some awkwardness plays out in a local inn when the two room together for the night. But, before too long, the truth comes out and they both IMMEDIATELY fall in love, for some reason. Weak? Yes. Cheap, hasty move to tie the plot of a somewhat short movie together? Yes. But all in all, people flocked to see Garbo, an actress who wanted to constantly be left alone. In the few movies I've seen with her as the star, she just seemed like she wanted to be just that. Maybe the enigma was the appeal.
