moviescriticnet (br) wrote: This one is controversial director Gaspar Noe's first movie and it really is as controversial as you would expect. Surprisingly enough it won a minor award in Cannes film festival but there is no easy way to really evaluate this movie. It's supposed to be a crime/drama movie that talks about everything in society but in reality I would say it's one of the most ridiculously funny movies I have ever seen.Just read the description of the film in imdb: "A horse meat butcher's life and mind begins to breakdown as he lashes out against various factions of society while attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter.".Yes both his life and his mind are breaking down while he stands alone against the whole society (the English title of the film is "I stand alone") and his way to "reconnect with his estranged daughter" is [Spoiler Alert] to rape her two times, one in his mind and one in reality!!The problem with this movie is that you can't know if Noe (who surely is completely nuts) is making fun of it or if he is serious. Either way my two cents are that it is an absolutely ludicrous film suitable only for the twisted minds, therefore if you can stand raw violence combined with lethally funny quotes, I strongly suggest it.Do not expect to learn anything about how society works though ;-)Grade: C+

Feru S (ca) wrote: The movie really has an 80s feel to it. Not great ... considering it was directed by Zeffirelli (of Romeo & Juliet) ... but I love the nostalgia and seeing a number of stars (incl Tom Cruise) in their early roles. And of course Brooke Shields looked absolutely gorgeous. But whatever happened to Martin Hewitt?
Trisha W (it) wrote: This wasn't nearly as good as the other Herbie films. This one seemed to be tacked on to try and milk the system for more money, even though none of the actors returned and even the name Herbie was hardly used. The story was fairly cute, although it had nothing to do with racing which was what the whole Herbie series was about - a racing slug bug that beat all the odds. There were a few cute parts like in the matador ring and the launching of the bananas, but overall the film didn't impress me at all. The acting was ok, but nothing to write home about. The biggest flaw was the lack of consistency between the first 3 (and even the late addition Herbie Fully Loaded), making this film seem out of place.
