(de) wrote: This was the last full length movie directed by Michael Powell. It was many years after the famous Powell & Pressburger partnership created such great movies as "The Red Shoes" & "Black Narcissus". Powell had been branded as box office poison because one of his movies failed to attract viewers. This was a wonderful resurgence and book end for this master director. Placing a 24 year old Helen Mirren with a mature James Mason on an Australian island, Powell explored the evolution of their relationship. Mason's character is a world famous artist who came to the Great Barrier Reef to escape his art and the world. He winds up painting the young Helen Mirren. The beauty of the location accentuates the beauty of the model. Some of the locals decide to insert themselves into this platoinic relationship and help to draw the two even closer emotionally. This movie can be difficult to find, but it is worth the effort. Give yourself a treat.

It is a delicious Story as well, great acting, fabulous costumes, and musical numbers. This film is the Debut of Lucy's Orange Red Hair that became her Trademark.Ester Williams plays a Socialite, Connie Allenbury, who is Suing the Newspaper Bill Stevens(Van Johnson) works at for Libel.Bills job is to pretend marry Gladys(Lucille Ball) ,Court Connie(Esther Williams) & set her up & stage a Scandal to get her to drop the Lawsuit.Theres a Hitch, Bill (Van) & Connie(Esther) fall in Love. The Complications are amusing & there is the Love Triangle, more like Quadrangle(Keenan Wynn is Lucy's Fiance), which all makes for a beautifully adorable Fun frolic. There is Singing, Dancing,Duck Hunting, & of course Swimming, after all, Esther Williams is in this, all of which are the makings for a Fabulous MGM success.

(es) wrote: Still a weird movie. 20 to 30 years after I saw it for the first time, and it's still creepy. You've got to hand it to Michael Keaton. He's a pretty versatile actor, and has played some pretty nutty roles.
(mx) wrote: A movie I have seen several times over the years, including when it first came out at the cinema. While it's not perfect, and not an absolute favourite, I do enjoy it. Particularly Winona Ryder and Janeane Garofolo. Vicky, in particular was a very good character. I love her look and quirky personality. I do find Ethan Hawke's Troy an absolute twat, and that has only increased over the years. I can't believe he's the supposed hot guy you are meant to feel for. A womanising, chain smoking slacker. Mmm. Does it for me. Ben Stiller's character is a bit too yuppie to really cheer on, but he's preferable to Troy. Quite nostalgic 90's viewing and some good music on the soundtrack including Juliana Hatfield.
