Shawn E (ag) wrote: An incredibly enlightening, funny, and slightly disturbing look at a man who was given the opportunity to pursue his dreams. As a result of his incredibly bloated ego and, overall, the fact that he was a huge asshole, Troy Duffy ended up falling flat on his face, losing everything. Now, let's face it people, I have been quite vocal about my opinion that The Boondock Saints is an awful movie. I understand if you're a frat boy with raging hormones, a tendency to drink alcoholic beverages excessively (before noon), and you think that your average sports broadcast contains all the secrets to the meaning of life, you may disagree with this sentiment. However, if you're the kind of person who enjoys a story that doesn't seem like a mishmash of all the 'cool', 'hip', films that were coming out during that time period, any form of character development (or likable characters for that matter), dialogue that doesn't sound like it was written by these previously mentioned frat boys, or even the slightest inclination of creative insight in your movies, there is no way around the fact that The Boondock Saints is an incredibly flawed and shallow piece of work from a wannabe Quentin Tarantino. What's great about this documentary, which was originally supposed to chart the rise of Saints' writer/director Troy Duffy, originally a bartender who had the chance of a lifetime when Miramax head Harvey Weinstein offered him a $1 million deal for his script, is that it reveals him as a man who is so despicable, egotistical, and unlikable that it makes you happy that the film initially failed at the Box Office and received a critical thrashing (it still sports a whopping 16% on Rotten Tomatoes). As a result, when Weinstein backs out of the deal, leaving Duffy with nothing, you can't help but laughing at the irony of it all. After all, the guy has his own self-congratulatory penis so far up his own ass that he manages to alienate himself from the only ones who ever believed in him and all the potential business partners and opportunities he could have had. His unbelievably cocky, cavalier, prickish attitude towards relatives, studio heads, and friends make his deserved crash and burn that much more entertaining to watch. It's just like watching all those bumbling two-dimensional villains from all those silly Disney movies get their comeuppances. You really can't help but cheer. This documentary demands to be shown to film students and aspiring filmmakers everywhere. It is the perfect example of how an out of control ego can lead to one's downfall. There's no denying that Duffy was the chief architect of his own demise. Thankfully for us, the two friends of Duffy's who were responsible for this movie followed through with finishing it even when everything was falling apart around their circle of friends. And luckily enough, the results are just as entertaining to watch as they are painful to witness.

Emily R (it) wrote: This was was a good movie but I was hoping for a twist that would make everything turn out the way I wanted it to and it just didn't happen. So it really was good but I'm addicted to the chick flicks that turn out the way you see coming a mile away, which I usually like, and this was a deeper drama that is more about the story, the feelings and the meaning of things.

Podcastings Brock (ca) wrote: Enjoyable, if a tad dated, modern take on the film noir about a private investigator hired to find a missing husband by her not-too-concerned wife. The movie is terrifically filmed, highlighting the environments amazingly well (DP is the remarkable Conrad Hall) and the picture moves at a wonderful pace. The screenplay by William Goldman is another great one by him, full of his great humor and turn of phrase. Given the type of movie this is, the characters are all pretty much types, but the screenplay gives the actors much to work with. And work with it they do.What makes HARPER remarkable is the veteran cast. This thing is packed with dependable actors giving pitch-perfect performances. Particularly impressive was Robert Wagner, Strother Martin, Julie Harris and Arthur Hill. Shelley Winters is chewing up the screen, such a great job here. Am I forgetting someone.... mmm... let me think. Oh, yeah. ;) Paul Newman gives yet another notable performance in the title role. Admittedly I'd watch him read a coloring book, but he just commands your attention in this movie. He is so present in every scene it is a delight to watch him work. From the opening shot when we see him wake up he had me, and from there with that opening scene as the credits appear he tells us everything we need to know about this guy without saying a word. And it is funny to boot. I have to keep watching more Paul Newman.HARPER is a satisfying watch. Sure, some of the music and dancing is of its time, but it doesn't detract from the performances, the mystery plot or the fun. Check it out when you get the chance.Recommend.

Ernie P (gb) wrote: As always, Robert Ryan is brilliant, but my complaint is that he isn't enough of a presence in this film....Van Heflin is good, but he decidedly lacks Ryan's intensity....Mary Astor is also very good in this - indeed, the best scenes in the film belong to her....if you're a fan of film noir, you'll probably like this, but "Act Of Violence" is a notch below the greatest films of this genre.

Melissa Y (fr) wrote: I don't remember what happened in the movie because I spent the whole time making screenshots of young Viv & Larry who are just too adorable/gorgeous.

Billie S (mx) wrote: The first and the best in a series of movies Mad Max. Mad Max was the first Miller's movie, and he made a huge effort to film it because he had a problem with a lack of money. How much money was missing shows the fact that about 20% of the action scenes are not recorded according to plan, Mazda Bongo car destroyed in the opening scene of the movie belonged to the director Miller and only two main actors had jackets of real leather, while all the others were copies. But that did not stop him to create a truly timeless classic. This futuristic movie, in which he managed to capture the special atmosphere of the raw and cruel world, is holding the Guinness record for most profitable movie. Mad Max is a hell of a good ride, but what makes the movie special is also the story, that other Mad Max movies do not have.
