On a scientific expedition to Siam young Billy Batson is given the ability to change himself into the super-powered Captain Marvel by the wizard Shazam, who tells him his powers will last only as long as the Golden Scorpion idol is threatened. Finding the idol, the scientists realize it could be the most powerful weapon in the world and remove the lenses that energize it, distributing them among themselves so that no one would be able to use the idol by himself. Back in the US, Billy Batson, as Captain Marvel, wages a battle against an evil, hooded figure, the Scorpion, who hopes to accumulate all five lenses, thereby gaining control of the super-powerful weapon

And after all that, there really isn't a lot of character development for me to actually care about the hell these 3 people are in. This film is really just a portrait of this trio which are in an unsolvable dilemma. The best (and only) enjoyable part of this film was Beatrice Dalle's performance especially her death scene. Vincent Gallo is only tolerable when he doesn't say anything. Maybe one day I'll watch this again, to see if I enjoy it more, but it won't be any time/year soon.

Ian B (es) wrote: An enjoyable followup to Death on the Nile, but it doesn't quite pack the same punch due to a much weaker story. Peter Ustinov returns as Poirot and is joined by another great supporting cast (Maggie Smith, James Mason, Roddy McDowall, Diana Rigg...). The locations and cinematography are absolutely stunning and are a big part of why the movie is so enjoyable, because the story is sorely lacking. Ustinov (although miscast) carries the movie well, the performances are fun to watch, and there's some great dry humor, but the film just drags a little too often and the final twist isn't really all that satisfying. A decent entry in the Agatha Christie genre, but far from one of the best.

Romantic comedies have always featured insufferable cads and neurotic shrews. Here, one wonders what Rock Hudson must have thought, particularly when insinuating to Day that her stolid Texan mate is, ahem, "playing for the other team."
