Diana L (kr) wrote: This book is one of my favorite novels I've ever read. I adore every word. In truth, before seeing the film, I had heard most fans were disappointed...and I was definitely among them. I'll start with the good: the acting is superb as is the cinematography and scenery. The characters are played whole heatedly and in turn, there was still some magic in the film. The music was also lovely, however I wish so much that they would have put in the music Murakami talks about in the book. It would have added much more to the experience. Other than these few things, I have to say, I was very underwhelmed. I don't blame it all on the movie...it would have to be 5 hours long to fit the whole story. What was upsetting was which things they took out, changed, and left out. If I had never read the book, I'm pretty sure I would have had hardly any idea what was going on. It's like they took snippets of the novel and melded them together. The most upsetting were the scenes with Midori. She seemed like just another girl that he knew when in reality, her character is much deeper. Also Reiko. The way they portrayed her character at the end was so disappointing since they changed her reasoning and didn't go into her story in the middle of the film. It is so far less meaningless than it really is. The ending as well, the changes were unneeded and almost dumbed this down to just another sad love story, when in reality it's soooo much more. I adore the actors. They gave their hearts and souls and made the film moving enough, but I wish it would have been more thorough and everything I wanted instead of an altered clip show.

Jonny P (ca) wrote: "L'Heure d'ete" was a bit slow for my taste. I love Juliette Binoche and Edith Scob had some nice delivery of her dialogue, but it honestly took over three hours to get through this film because I kept falling asleep. The story is interesting as it shows how the lives of three children went in completely opposite directions and how their perspectives on dividing up their deceased mother's estate are completely different depending on their personal circumstances. I liked all of the references to art but feel that the art aspect was underplayed. "L'Heure d'ete" has some interesting content but for me, it fell flat as a whole.

Jessica G (ca) wrote: This movie was a movie I have wanted to see for over 10 years - the wait wasn't worth it!!!The only reason it gets half a star is because the monkeys are so unbelivably cute!***SPOILER WARNING****This is the basic "woman chased by a murderer", but instead she's chased by a monkey that is smarter than herself. So we follow the stupid girl as she tries half-assed attempts to get away from the monkey. Uh!

Richard D (mx) wrote: A brilliantly directed late-period Spaghetti revenge flick. Castellari's use of light and shade is great, the family drama is well-played, and the use of flashbacks is inventive and original. The soundtrack, though, is awful and really badly used. Its such a shame - this would easily be a five-star Western otherwise, but for pseudo-folk (it sounds like someone doing a bad Buffy St-Marie impression) breaking out every five minutes and telling us exactly what our hero is thinking. A real shame, because this is a brilliant film otherwise, and its still recommended.
Alec B (jp) wrote: It's easy to see how the conspiracy and thriller elements have been influential (and those are the best parts of the movie) but it's hard to look past the dull and kind of creepy Stockholm Syndrome "romance" between Redford and Dunaway.
