Ryan V (kr) wrote: Day For Night is a proto-mockumentary that follows the production of a middling romantic drama from its first day of shooting to its wrap-up. Along the way, its seasoned crew must contend with a supporting actress' pregnancy, distracting sexual hook-ups from its cast, the sudden death of a lead actor when the shooting is 2/3 of the way completed, and a plethora of other obstacles that inevitably invade a project with as many moving parts as filmmaking. Co-writer/director Francois Truffaut clearly believes in the "magic" of cinema even as he uses this film to highlight the labored artifice behind even the minor details of movie making. The deeply personal subject matter and the affecting performances of an amiable cast turn Day For Night into something that's breezy, amusing, relatable, and entertaining.
