Art S (fr) wrote: An early one from Powell and Pressburger that is a masterwork in sympathetic propaganda. And when I say sympathetic I mean to say that they choose not to totally villainize all Germans but instead choose to make one or two human. In fact, it is the German band of submariners who escape when their U-boat is destroyed in Hudson Bay, Canada, who we follow through the film as they escape across Canada. A lot of British stars waived part of their fees for the war effort to appear: Laurence Olivier as a French Canadian trapper (!), Anton Walbrook as the leader of a German Hudderite settlement, Raymond Massey as an AWOL Canadian soldier, and Leslie Howard as a British expert on Native Americans camping in the Rockies. Eric Portman plays the dastardly leader of the Nazi group to evil effect but not without some humanity given his plight. Powell knows that propaganda should only work (on the intelligent) to the extent that it feels realistic and like it speaks the truth rather than demonizing and over-doing it. Message aside, one can already see Michael Powell's genius as a director with montage, fades, efficient use of screen time, and nearly surreal moments of beauty shining through.

Jillian L (au) wrote: Anyway, I was planning on watching this even though it got mixed-leaning towards negative reviews. And I actually really enjoyed it. It's funny, quickly paced, and the acting is great. It even throws in a lesson about friendship at the end. That being said, none of the leads are likeable. Well acted, but not likeable. Kirsten Dunst is a type-A control freak, Lizzy Caplan is an unreliable adult still acting like a teenager, and Isla Fisher is the typical "dumb whore". Now, I say these things because they are the stereotypes given to us at the beginning of the movie, stereotypes that they all fall into. What made me like this movie though, is that by the end, you see more about them. You see why they became this way and that there is more to them than when we first met them and I loved that. Like I said, the acting is great. The three ladies killed it. Especially Lizzy Caplan. Rebel Wilson got some great moments, even though you question why here character was friends with these people in the first place. Adam Scott, James Marsden, and Andrew Rannells plays some of the guys, and they were all funny as well. Basically, I can see why people didn't like this. It's crude, raunchy, and full of unlikeable characters. But I was laughing out loud so that's got to say something.

Allen G (it) wrote: Not much to say about this one really- it does what it says on the tin. There are some surprises in there though, particularly a human element whereby we get a good idea of the difficulties of actually trying to pursue a career in competitive gaming and the social impact of this. For me, that gives this a little something more than just your standard documentary fare. Is that enough to convince people who aren't interested in the subject matter into taking anything from it though? Probably not but, hey, if you're reading this, you're already interested enough, I guess.
