Peter F (us) wrote: Gnter Grass's sprawling novel actually proved to make for quite a good film, albeit one that couldn't entirely settle itself through its modes. Director and co-writer Volker Schlndorff wisely chose to condense the novel's story in a way that was faithful yet independent, able to walk the line between magical-realism and authenticity. His directing, however, is the most visible attraction, as his viscera replicates the whimsical feel of Grass's prose, and the film is actually strongest when it is most child-like. Still, where the film does falter a bit is with it's emotional content, as while we may understand the plight of our Oskar, the nuance isn't quite there for us to fully connect with it, and the ending actually feels side-lined when it should be at it's most pivotal. Given the international success of the novel, and the relative accessibility of the film, it's no great surprise that The Tin Drum became one of the most popular German films of its generation, and while it might not measure up to the works of Fassbinder and Herzog, it's still a very important piece for its country, and its era.
Meera G (it) wrote: A beautiful story with a deeper message. A classic for a reason.
John S (nl) wrote: It's poorly written and has no structure, and it's disappointing in the laughter department, but it's Charlie Chaplin we're talking about here. He could be in the worst movie ever made and make it watchable. He's always a blissful wonder to behold. His energy, his lovable rambunctiousness, and his silly ways are always delightful, even when he doesn't have a good story or well-structured jokes to back him up.
Kevin S (jp) wrote: this movie wasnt that good at all, i gave it a star in a half for the few laughs i had but it was slow and dull and acting wasnt really done well at all not worth going to the movies over wait for it to free stream on netflix to check it out

Patrick J (br) wrote: I think this was ok. It had some mumbo jumbo stuff, and wasn't scary. Evidently there is an alternate ending that horrified audiences... I'd like to have seen that one.
