If Verhoeven's intention was to make a satire of Las Vegas as a place of exploitation and hypocrisy then his film is brilliant, but it does feel like he is trying to make something serious, which makes its hilarious campy vibe come off as trashy and completely unintentional

t the very least its a definite improvement over its last 4 predecessors and one that holds up best today despite its obviously dated as can be effects. Still with so many monsters appearing and a fun if goofy sci-fi plot the movie has its charms for fans of giant monsters and I'm one who hopes that the new Godzilla series gives it a modern remake. The limited screen time the monsters share make this hardly the all out monster mash it advertised itself as

While on the surface a clever and funny movie -- there is a constant creepy and perversely provocative layer to this battle of the sexes that gives this film not only complexity but depth. Amalric and Seigner are in top form. Polanski makes minimal changes in the play to bring it to the screen, but applies enough style and pace that it works better than the play

There's not much explanation given about anything that happens in the movie, and it just didn't make much sense to me. A pretty low-budget looking British horror film about some bloke that moves into a haunted apartment

I know I am gonna keep watching this once in a while in future too. With a lot of characters, this film tends to be little bit too fragmentary and much like summaries of several stories (especially in the second half), but it still has so much cinematic pleasure. Wong Kar-Wai's fetishism and personal taste on costumes of 1960s Hong Kong, wuxia novels, soundtracks of Europian films, food and cigarettes are also at the peak. Cinematography by the team led by Christopher Doyle is gorgeous and elaborate as usual, but set design by William Cheung is overwhelming. Besides familiar faces in his films like Tony Leung, Faye Wong and Carina Lau, newly added to this world are big stars from outside Hong Kong such as Gong Li, Ziyi Zhang, and Takuya Kimura. "2046" can be seen as a sequel of each of "Days of Being Wild" (1990) and "In the Mood for Love" (2000) and also as a complement to both of them. This is a story about people who are betrayed and hurt by love but still keep seeking for it. He deepens the idea of noir, which is his origin (his debut "As Tears Go By" (1988) is a noir), in his own way. Wong as an artist is completed with this film. I am addicted to this world that Wong Kar-Wai creates and never can get out. One of my all-time favorite, besides evaluation as a film
