An Enemy of the People

Legendary Indian film director Satyajit Ray developed this project based on a classic play by Henryk Ibsen because his doctor wanted him to only shoot films in a studio. The story has been transferred to Bengal, and Bengali is the language used in the film. In the story, Dr. Ashoke Gupta (Soumitra Chatterji) is an idealistic doctor working in a town near Calcutta. He discovers that the water at a popular temple is the source of an outbreak of typhoid and hepatitis. In order to save lives, he risks his career to try and call attention to this polluted water source. His efforts are thwarted by a local group of building contractors, who attempt to discredit him in various ways. Despite that, Dr. Gupta has supporters, and a reporter from Calcutta offers to tell his story in the papers there.

In this adaption of the Ibsen stage play, an idealistic physician discovers that the town's hot springs are dangerously contaminated. But with the community relying on the spa for tourist dollars, his warnings to the falls for deaf ears. . You can read more in Google, Youtube, Wiki

Richard L (jp) wrote: Full of passion and fun, Nightmare Factory is an inside look into the world of bringing monsters, aliens and other horrors to life. One can't help but smile with the love the doc's subjects have for what they do.

Tiyakin Z (fr) wrote: Very powerfully portrayed. Warning: might leave you with emotions you did not want.

Martin S (br) wrote: Otro intento del cine dominicano. Tieneuchos pro pero sus contras son execivos. Juande lancer le falta mucho poraprender y lo demostr con esta pelicula.

Pablo G (mx) wrote: Many of its core themes are ussually left undeveloped in comparisson to its structure and characters, but it is nevertheless a plain bizzarre and strangely plausible look inside the family that no one knows and that one finds to be both intriguing and perverse at the same time.

Noah S (de) wrote: The cinematography kept me riveted to the screen, and the final act was a complete 180 - a fun reinterpretation of the typical tragic ending.

Stephen Y (de) wrote: This movie had it all...1) A woman with a half shaved head with sickle.2) A warrior who can cut heads off with an umbrella.3) A guy with a big lobster claw shaped shell cracker that rips limbs off.4) Shields with rotating blades.5) A guy with a long fish net that can fling an entire horse.6) Gratuitous violence with severed limbs and heads. (Sometimes still moving after the fact.)7) Men biting women on the back, while the women bite into food. (Don't know, much be a Chinese thing. ;) )8) Villagers, Generals, Slaves, and European weapons (Cannons).9) A sentimental scene involving a loyal horse.10) A story about saving a village but in the end everyone dies except the children.11) A famous director - Tsui Hark12) Both Chinese and Korean actors.13) My version of the movie was dubbed in British English so the Chinese actors talked like Hugh Grant.14) 7 magical swords with special powers though only 3 or 4 swords were demonstrated. Yet, this movie was disappointing. A weak storyline, uneven editing, bad dubbing/voice over, and an overall "low budget" feel, took away from the entire movie. Even Tsui Hark's directorial skills could not save this movie. Not recommended for rental. At over two hours, there are far better films in this genre.

Richard D (ru) wrote: Judy Davis plays a dedicated communist in 1950's Australia. Her letters to Stalin (F. Murray Abraham) garner her an invitation to Moscow, largely so he can bed her. He does, but when he dies in the throws of passion, she returns to Australia pregnant with what might be his son. (She sleeps with KGB double-agent Sam Neill on the same night.) Needing a father for her child, she marries nice-guy Geoffrey Rush who raises the possible son of Stalin as his own. When he grows up (and becomes Richard Roxborough), Stalin, Jr. marries an attractive policewoman (Rachel Griffiths) and becomes the ruthless leader of a police union. A hell of a lot goes on in the strange, undeservedly obscure Aussie comedy. With a cast like this, how come nobody has heard of it. Possibly because it's very weird, and not in the kind of way that garners a large cult following. Although the last half hour slopes of pretty dramatically, I really enjoyed this oddity.

CHICAGO CUBBIE GIRL (ag) wrote: Love this movie! I've watched it so many times I can do it line for line. I'm a huge fan of Elvis and I think this paints a fair (and hopefully) honest picture of the man.

Lee M (kr) wrote: While it lacks the lightness of touch and smooth flow that distinguishes Bergman at his finest, this is still a powerful, profound work of art that pulses with the rhythms of life rather than the rhythms of drama.

Lucas M (nl) wrote: Jerzy Kawalerowicz's art horror, it's not just one of the best films about faith and religion, but also could bring a big debate about the theme. William Friedkin's The Exorcist, for certain was inspired in this 60's classic with great actings by the cast. Surrealist, tense and surprising. Fresh.

James D (gb) wrote: B-movie, second-feature that plays as a cross between classic noir and serial melodrama. As such, it's easy to see how it's often credited with being a predecessor of the police procedural.Stevens and O'Brian play two likable LAPD patrol cops. Gale Storm the wholesome new dispatch girl who keeps their attention at night. Most of the movie deals with the growing and affectionately written romance between Stevens and Storm, making the whole thing seem at times like a vintage episode of 'Payton Place'. But make no mistake, we're in noir territory, and it's only a matter of time before we're dealing with gangsters, their molls, heartbreaking tragedy and small children being held from eighth floor windows. The leads are so charismatic, and the writing so sharp, that it's almost impossible not to like this film. Another little post-war gem of a movie.

Bavner D (mx) wrote: Cukup inspiratif, menyentuh, dan he're a jackpot! Kisah film ini berhasil dikemas sesuai dengan potensialnya. Tidak ada yang membosankan, dan tidak akan memusingkan penontonnya ketika para karakter dalam film ini saling berdebat satu sama lain ataupun bercanda kasar. Actually, it's one of the great movie I've ever seen!

Sean F (nl) wrote: Desolation of Smaug, while it may be nearly 3 hours long, is 3 hours worth spending, Desolation is fun, while there are MASSIVE changes from the 300 page book, this would've been an excellent ending chapter for Peter Jackson's Middle-Earth trilogy (but you just had to make 5 pages a 3 hour movie didn't you, ya bloody sellout) but Desolation was brilliant, so there that is!

Ronnie M (br) wrote: I didn't give this a full 5 stars because this movie left me wanting more. This film is severely under rated because of the darkly heartbreak going on with the parents. But I wanted to see more after Greta discovered the truth. After the screen fades.
