Darren H (au) wrote: Thelma Ritter may have won the Oscar for her supporting role in this anti-Communist feature - or is it anti anti-Communist? - but it's Richard Widmark who steals the film with the line of century: "Are you waving the flag at me?" An ultimate slap in the face to conformity and false patriotism.

NoHell and Back serves as a useful reminder as how comedy should not be done.So what did I like? The animation was actually pretty decent. It was Tim Burton esque which is what I would expect for something set in Hell. There were a few chuckles as well. That's about it.Hell and back is a considerable mess in which spouting a bunch of swear words and sex jokes replaces actual clever humour. Don't get me wrong, vulgarity and dirty jokes are great. But only if you do it correctly. Saying shit 400 times in a row isn't funny. It's just mind numbing. In addition, the movie is a complete mess. Too many plot points which are unresolved, stupid and clich. All characters are unlike-able horny assholes. Hell and back is a missed stop-motion opportunity which could've served to be as funny as some Robot Chicken sketches (like the star wars parodies) but infused with a complete slate of originality. This is just viewable, but effortless, junk.D+30/100
