Marion is a woman who has learned to shield herself from her emotions. She rents an apartment to work undisturbed on her new book, but by some acoustic anomaly she can hear all that is said in the next apartment in which a psychiatrist holds his office. When she hears a young woman tell that she finds it harder and harder to bear her life, Marion starts to reflect on her own life. After a series of events she comes to understand how her unemotional attitude towards the people around her affected them and herself.

It's not even that interesting. If it had been better directed and edited, I think I still would have been disappointed by it. It astonishes me that this bourgeois soap opera is being raved about by some top-notch critics. It is beautiful to look at; that's for sure. But films have to be way more than visually beautiful. They must have something to say. This film has little to say. It is soap opera given a high bourgeois treatment by a director (Chilean director Raul Ruiz) who loves mainstream 19th-century fiction. If Mr. Ruiz had any interest in the 21st century, he might be an interesting artist for us today. But he doesn't. He wants to go back in time to 1820, and he should. Even if he had anything fresh and interesting to say about the 19th century, that would be something. But he doesn't even have that. As an artist, he's embalmed.

(ag) wrote: Thrilling and captivating yet completely sick at the same time. It's not normal for thirtysomething year old men to go chatting up girls who are half their age online, but it happens anyway. And when it does, no one expects the so-called weak little girl to fight back. Normalcy certainly isn't the general theme this film is centered around. It's actually quite the opposite, giving the you the closer look you always wanted, posing the blatant question: what if it was the other way around? A very interesting concept that drew me in almost right away although the subject matter is very disturbing, considering the audience eventually finds out the horrible things Jeff did to numerous others just like Hayley herself. Shamelessly. If you walked in knowing nothing about the plot itself, you'd probably expect the suave guy to violate his new young friend whom he met online in a chatroom and decided to conveniently hook up with. Something typical. The tables turn within a blink of an eye, and before Jeff knows it, the roles are undeniably switched. It's absolutely twisted, yet the simple realization that Hayley is technically doing the right thing and serving Jeff his karma with the sharp blade of a knife complete with a sinister cat-and-mouse game is sickly satisfying. Then again, is she really doing the right thing? Is it right to fight fire with fire?In this case, my verdict is... of course. Sickos will be sickos, and quite frankly, there are too many of them in this world. Hayley is just doing us a solid by getting rid of a scumbag which happens to be wasting space and wreaking nothing but havoc here on Earth.I give Hard Candy 4/5 stars, but only because it left me with a lot of questions. Like what exactly happened to Hayley after she walked away. What happened when Jeff was found hanging off his roof, noose tightly snug around his neck. Wonder what the cops would have made of the crime scene.

(it) wrote: Its little more than a television pilot made direct to video feature and features musical numbers that are downright bad and animation that is a huge downgrade from the original. Still as a basic follow up to Aladdin it certainly could have been worse and has solid thrills even if they are television grade in nature

(us) wrote: A very hard film to sit through to the end, but well worth it. This is the best performance by Brad Davis and I'm always amazed at how much some actors will go through to make a movie feel authentic. The one-sided nature of the film is a little racist, and I don't know what the director was thinking, but to me the film isn't about making the statement that prison is Turkey is too inhumane, but it's the a story of endurance. This could be a story about a terrorist being tortured at Guantanamo Bay and even though I disagree with the terrorist politically I would still be captivated by his will to survive, if he plays the role convincingly.
