Tero H (it) wrote: Attempting perhaps to ride on the success of Ninja Assassin (the comparison is inevitable), this film does succeed in integrating lots of action into otherwise hollow story and shallow characters. The idea of a westerner inside a Ninjitsu school is far out (even more so as it was in American Ninja: here we have a cry back , way back to the 80's where a lonely japanese war veteran and Ninja master took an orphan kid under his tutelage to become a Ninja- here we have a guy whose background is similar, but not quite as well defined. and what makes this a more incredible scenario, is that Japanese martial arts schools are - as far as I know - known to be rather picky in teaching their arts to any foreigner), as are some of the action scenes. Yet, it does have well done stunts and fighting scenes which would have been enjoyable to watch were it not for the insane amount of violence. There is lots of action and the air is full of testosterone. Nicely done martial arts scenes. Although, it seemed to me to try to integrate every possible martial art with the exception of Capoeira into it. Wasnt this supposed to be Ninjitsu? One nice katana chiburi movement performed by Masazuka at the police station. Most other moves were too far out. The invisibility scene at the end was, despite possibly having been a small show of honor to Bruce Lee, rather too much and made the film look a bit silly. And I don't think real Ninjas would stand still and stay where they are just in order to pose so much. Also the antidote works really too fast to seem realistic. I sound like I'm nitpicking, so I'll quit. Some flicker of originality was definitely in the weapon fighting scenes: I don't remember ever having seen Sai used against a Katana or a Wakizashi. Too much blood and guts, too little originality, too shallow characters, too simplistic storyline. But lots of action. Still.. it did lack too much to make one want to see it again. Not for children. Heads roll.
