Justin M (it) wrote: Let me start by saying I hate Armond White, he's a disingenuous piece of shit who thinks films like Transformers are some big metaphor for post-industrial whatever, when he can't see the beauty in a film like this. Sadly, that seems to be the case for most film critics. But Bujalski's Beeswax challenges the notion of Hollywood escapism by moving to hyperrealism. Rather than superheroes, Bujalski presents flawed human beings, simply living. His amateur camerawork, supports the idea that this is a slice of life rather than a tall tale. What I like most about this is that although Bujalski loves these characters, he presents them in their moments of confusion, anger, and fear. But having fear, or anger, does not make you fall to "dark side," never to be good again- its just a part of being alive. I love Beeswax for what it is not, and Bujalski's aesthetic is extremely refreshing. That said, it is quite similar to Funny Ha Ha. That's not necessarily a bad thing when he's one of the few making movies this way, but for more thoughts on Bujalski you can read my review of that because it applies here.
