While this prequel from Disney doesn't come close to the massive standard set by its predecessor, it is still a good time. Oz is now an almost completely CGI animated background, much like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010). Thankfully, the cast, especially star James Franco, is just as animated and help bring this exciting, sometimes touching story to life. You'll like it if...you are an Oz fan, especially one waiting for a follow-up to Return to Oz (1985).

Through the making, they reveal the real stories behind the performers up for the parts, mirroring the compelling concept of A Chorus Line. And watch out for Jason Tam's audition....just mind-blowing.....!!!

Its sadly a standard cop and robbers flick loaded down with cliches and pub tough man bravado. It has some aspirations of being the British 'Heat', the Trafalgar Square shoot out being the key indicator but the whole thing just fizzles out into nothingness.

(gb) wrote: The movie that should never have been made. It is a word-for-word copy of the original script, just freshened up for the 2000's audience. An audience, one may presume, that the studio thinks are morons. I like the actors in the remake, but this is just a pointless movie. I guess if you never saw the original it would be just OK, hence the 40% audience score. Unfortunately this remake is a testament to the complete lack of creativity in Hollywood.
(au) wrote: While Patrick Swayze is a handsome addition to any movie, the film was sssoooo cheesy. It's all ballet, which is fine, but sometimes things go out of reality and suddenly the floor fills with fog. Barry and I decided to call it a dancical...like a musical, but with dance and waaay cheesier.
(fr) wrote: I remember seeing this on television when I was younger, and I thought it was okay, had some really dramatic, sad scenes... well, watching it again, for whatever reason, those dramatic, sad scenes (which are pretty much every single scene in this pointless film) just made me laugh at how cheesy, over-the-top, stylized and just awful they were, it's just a long soapy line of melodramatic ups and downs that lead nowhere, and it made me sick to the stomach to watch. A couple of the actors in this ensemble I really like, and even those I'm not personally fond of I can objectively say are talented performers, but none, not a single one of them, displays anything but emotional masturbation in this picture as far as I am concerned. Of course I blame this on the director, and the writer, not the actors themselves, but damn... can I have those two hours of my life back, somehow, please?

(au) wrote: A lot blander than the book. Too long on artistic licence, too short on gratuitous nudity (Gong Li was quite the stunner back then). Fascinating that many of the names are completely different from the book. Finally, one can't help but wonder what a director like Kurosawa would have done with this material and the beautiful filming locations.

(mx) wrote: This is a really fun movie. It is Al Pacino as you just don't often see him. He is wonderful in it, but it was greatly underappreciated because it is not his usual style. It is worth watching just to watch a really good, feel good movie. It is a wonderful side for Pacino. It shows his great versatility. He can be believable as anyone.

(us) wrote: Goes directly to my "So Bad It's Good" list. Like something Ed Wood might have done, had he actually had a budget (and better stock footage). The story is predictable, the acting is as would be expected (fun seeing young Dennis Hopper & John Saxon). While there is actually some fun/kitchy set & costume designs here...it seems all of their time and energy was spent on trying to make things seem "futuristic" (it is meant to take place in 1990 after all!) and not enough of story of plot development. Still, it's kinda fun, though ultimately anti-climactic.

(br) wrote: As far as first screenplays go, the Wachowski Brothers hit it big time with this one. This movie is very entertaining and has appropriate amount of action and suspense. The action sequences are great and the interactions between Stallone and Banderas excellent. If you're a fan of action films, this one is definitely worth a watch.
