I don't find self-proclaimed quirky, dark comedy dramas do that much for me. Film-makers pay attention: choose one genre or the other but don't try to do both, especially if your material isn't really that quirky.

This movie pissed me off, for lack of better terms. As an avid fan of Lovecraft, I have yet to watch any film that's done Lovecraft's work any justice, but this is just a fucking abomination.I'm not sure why this earned such positive reviews. It wasn't scary, it wasn't funny, and don't even get me started on how they disgraced the story. I guess it's because Stuart Gordon obviously didn't take his project seriously, therefore precluding him from scrutiny that more ambitious and sincere directors would have received. I watched this movie with lowered expectations, but nothing could have prepared me for this disappointment.I'm not sure whether I was watching an adaptation of a Lovecraft story, or a porn parody. I guess if you're immature, this is the right kind of movie for you. I suspect that Barbara Crampton is only ever cast in movies for two reasons, and neither one of them have to do with her acting. When she's not flailing around screaming, she's enraptured by orgasmic ecstasy and that's about the extent of her throwaway role. There's one scene that is such a ridiculous stretch of imagination which reveals Gordon's maturity. A woman is heard screaming upstairs. When they search the house for the source of said screaming, they discover that it is a porno. Everything from that moment onward is little more than a springboard for Stuart Gordon's prurient obsessions. Even offering only mediocre gore, this film stripped the original story of everything that made it as good as it was and transformed it into a caricature of its former self. The tension in the atmosphere? Gone. The scares? None. Sympathetic characters were lacking. With the exception of Bubba, I wanted the entire cast to just die already.Lovecraft's tales were always effective without him ever needing to rely on gratuity. He never needed to resort to a trashy love story subplot and sex to turn pages, but the directors resorted to the lowest denominator in filmmaking to exploit this spooky classic. I'm no prude, but this film made me want to take a shower. It was icky and exploitative.
