People here are complex but still choose what is best for themselves and have not too many scrupules. Except maybe the one that provokes the accident, but then again, he provoked an accident that was grave.

(ca) wrote: This film is interesting, although I don't mean that in the sense that it is particularly good but rather that it does reflect well the superstitions and misconceptions of the time. The plot is naive although this is probably not entirely the screen writer's fault. The novel it is based on does not seem to have been written by someone who has actually seen a roleplaying session, let alone taken part in one. We see a very young Tom Hanks as a troubled student whose mind is slowly being taken over by the character he plays in a fantasy roleplaying game. It's also interesting to see how at that time films portrait-ed such games and their players as somewhat sinister or dangerous, something to be worried about. In contemporary cinema the players are shown much more as hopelessly silly geeks or weirdos, not to be feared but rather pitied or laughed at. I wonder which one is better. The truly important message then comes at the very end of the film: that the main character's mental condition had nothing to do with playing the game and were certainly not caused by it.
