(ru) wrote: Last Ounce of Courage takes place in a skewed, alternate reality where everyday freedoms HAVE been taken away and Christmas is actually threatened by people such as an African-American man from Washington DC (seriously ... the film went there). There is NOTHING subtle about this movie (the TRUE patriotic hero of the film has a last name of Revere) and it comprised of nothing but false talking points that aren't even close to being true or becoming a reality (the Bible is NOT banned in schools ... go to the library). There are so many furrowed brows on display here the fictional town of Mt. Columbus appears to be among the angriest in film history. It is all balderdash. Even though the story is far-fetched, what truly makes the film a disaster are the low production values, the over-the-top-hoping-for-an-Oscar acting (whoa!), the blatant vilifying of select minorities and its sense of smugness that it has throughout for anybody with a differing opinion. This film is ALL wrong ... although I am sure it'll have its fans believing its drivel.

(kr) wrote: James Ivory's films are for people who understand nothing about movies and who (secretly) enjoyed being bored. His lifeless and dreary, genteel potboilers are made to order for those who feel that "gaining Culture" should be like having a bowel movement when you are very, very constipated.

(ru) wrote: *** (out of four) A strange departure for Tennessee Williams. While the theme of a bantering newleywed couple seems right up his alley, the fast that it is a comedy is a bit odd. Still interesting but a little flat. It is helped by lively performances from Jane Fonda and Tony Franciosa.
(ru) wrote: A decidedly less comical film, but boasting an introduction by the director himself (to get us in the mood) and a typically great performance by Vincent Price, "Mr. Sardonicus" is vintage William Castle, down to the gimmicky "vote" ending. Despite being unevenly paced, the fact it is more of a fable than a carnival show evidences that beyond the gimmickry Castle was a rather strong director who excelled at creating atmosphere in what essentially ammounted to studio cheapies. His films may not have aspired to be "high art", but they truly excelled at what they did aspire to: being fun."Mr. Sardonicus" is not a career highlight for Castle or Price, but its an interesting turn by the former that is carried by the latter and is worth watching for fans of either.
(jp) wrote: Frothy, fun comedy with some smart jabs at advertising and fan worship. Tony Randall is a hoot as the suddenly fish out of water main character and Jayne Mansfield, repeating her stage triumph, is a knockout and proves an adapt comedienne. Had she had more roles like this her career at the top might not have been so short. Joan Blondell scores strongly as Jayne's right hand woman.

(gb) wrote: I'm not sure if I like this one as much as My Man Godfrey, but it's still a great movie. The acting is pretty good all around. William Powell is hysterically funny and brings his character to life in amazing ways. Irene Dunne is also marvelous as Powell's overemotional yet very sly wife. While I did find the religious fixation on baptism to be more than just a little preachy at times, it's still handled in a funny way, and I guess you can blame it on being a byproduct of its time . (By the way, I don't know why, but the way that the actors say "bap-TIZED" instead of just "baptized" made me laugh.) Overall, it's a great little story about life with pompous but well-intentioned father with odd quirks. There's no villain, no twists, no contrivences, and none of those things are needed. Sometimes just a story with interesting characters is all you really need. If you haven't seen this one already, I'd definitely recommend it.
(jp) wrote: I liked the movie overall. The only downside of this film is that it is all fighting and has no central plot. It has pretty good fight scenes though. Like I said, the movie was pretty good overall.
