Aaron W (it) wrote: Mr. Freedom is my first foray into the cinema of William Klein, and I'm surprisingly on the fence about it.The titular character is an exaggerated stereotype of the typical American, and it seems that the stereotypes haven't changed much since 1969. He's a mix of Batman, Captain America, and James Bond amongst other American heroes (well Bond's British, but you get the idea); only he kills on whim, even for fun, at slightest whiff of possible communism. He's a racist, a womanizer, and extremely reactionary. His followers are blinded by propaganda; chanting, singing the "Freedom" anthem, and rejoicing as he pointlessly destroys entire cities when his demands are not met. Now, I'm sure Klein was a fairly liberal type and it would seem apparent that this film is meant to be a satire of what is considered to be right-wing American culture and foreign policy (the Vietnam war, consumerism, imperialism and all that.) To be honest I almost felt like it overplayed the stereotypes a bit which would've been fine had Klein somehow had something in the film to represent the faults with the other side at the time as well. As it is the film comes off almost as sensational as the propaganda it criticizes. At times it seems to be satirizing the satire, and while I'd like to think this was intentional I find that to be unlikely considering Klein's politics. The look of the film is great. It's sort of a comic bookish and campy as hell, with inflatable characters all over the place. (the bad guy, Red China Man, is a giant inflatable Dragon.) If anything, the visuals are what kept me interested; bright colors, fireworks, and go-go embassy hostesses, and it's hard to deny that Klein has a great eye. There are plenty moments of bizarre hilarity as well, with Mr. Freedom giving long, politician-like, monologues while wearing a hockey uniform and handing out an explosive device called "the big one."Overall, I may have to watch this again sometime, and it certainly has me interested in Klein's work, but I can't say that I liked it nearly as much as I thought I would.
