(de) wrote: No stars. One of the absolute worst films I've ever seen, and certainly one of the worst "sequels." I do not blame Ed Sanchez and Dan Myrick, the masterminds behind the original, for this atrocity. They always had plans to make a sequel to the original, but they wanted to do so on THEIR terms. But Artisan Entertainment, who picked up the original lowbudget indie flick for a paltry $1 million and suddenly saw it become an unexpected box office smash and praised as a groundbreaking evolution in horror filmmaking, saw nothing but dollar signs. So they decided to make this without Dan or Ed's participation. The plot...the plot pisses me off so bad I have trouble writing about it. Anyway, this film takes place in a universe where the Blair Witch legend (elaborated on in the mockumentary "The Curse of the Blair Witch") is 100% true, and our three unhappy campers from the last film truly did disappear without a trace (save for their footage and equipment) in the woods near Burkittsville, MD. The footage became a movie (apparently in this universe you can watch snuff films at your local cinema) and the movie inspires a bunch of morons from around the country to venture out into the same woods to try and find out if the Blair Witch really is haunting the area. Now...if they've seen the first film...the answer is...YES. YES SHE IS, AND AS THE OLD FISHERMAN SAID IN THE FIRST FILM, "DAMN FOOL KIDS'LL NEVER LEARN!" But these aren't just amateur college kids. There's an author and his pregnant wife, a Wiccan, a goth with alleged psychic abilities, all lead by a rugged woodsman/paranormal investigator who are all determined to find out what REALLY happened on those fateful 8 days. Sound familiar? Of course it does. Whoever wrote THIS garbage just plucked a few key phrases from the film's mythology (Elly Kedward, Rustin Parr, Coffin Rock) and wedged them into the story wherever they might have fit. They don't. The Blair Witch elements stand awkwardly next to the newly added elements. I say "new" in that they're new to the Blair Witch saga. They are actually the kind of stale, boring and overused tripe that everyone thinks of when they think of bad horror films. None of the characters stand out, the film moves from one scene to the next with the grace of a drunken elephant, and, most important of all, absolutely nothing is added to help us understand or interpret the first film. Or even scare us. As I've said before, I've seen bad horror movies that weren't scary to me, but I at least could see where the scares were supposed to be. In this film, I couldn't tell ya what was supposed to be scary. To preserve the excellence and brilliantly distilled terror of the original, don't ever watch "Book of Shadows." It may have "Blair Witch 2" clumsily tacked onto it's title, but it is NOT a film made with the original film's great care and ingenuity. Sequels to scary movies don't get more piss poor than this.
(ca) wrote: Didn't watch this when it first came out. I think a while later, my sister and I watched it on rental, but I couldn't remember much of it. When it was added to Netflix for Halloween and I had a boring day, I decided to give it a go.As it is one of the many "dark" or "depressing" movies that teenage girls love to watch and praise, (See also from Tim Burton's repertoire, "The Nightmare Before Christmas") I figured it would be a decent kids' movie, but nothing more.I was actually somewhat surprised. The animation is fantastic. The design of this world is nice, creepy, and fun, which is to be expected from Tim Burton. The music, which is a highlight of the film, is also very lively, quirky, and spooky, which is also to be expected from Tim Burton's "music buddy", Danny Elfman. The story is interesting, but nothing really all that special. The villain is pretty weak, and even the main characters aren't that interesting. None of the characters are, really, but that isn't enough to make this a bad movie. However, I can't say this is a great one. It's good. It's fun. The animation and music is really quite good. However, it's not one that I can say fully lived up to the hype.

(br) wrote: Man what a terrible movie! No wonder this movie was so underground. There were scenes where the boom mike fell into the shot and not to mention the final scene was horrible. The only reason why I sat through the whole thing was to see how much worse it was going to get. I'm very disappointed in Luke Wilson and Jack Black being a part of this movie, they're better then this. See it if you want, you wont be missing much
(kr) wrote: Palookaville is an "inept crook comedy", which could have easily been a Tarentinoesque violence thing, Instead, it is a low key comedy with lots of muted laughs, good performances, and wonderful character development. William Forsythe, Vincent Gallo and Adam Trese play lifelong buddies in Jersey City, New Jersey, all unemployed, all more or less in a state of perpetual childhood, and all looking for a way to make some money and have a life. As the film opens, they are breaking into a jewelry store. They make a small miscalculation, and end up in a bakery. Being basically optimistic guys, they make the best of things by clearing out the few dollars in the register, and eating their fill of pastry. They then try an abortive attempt to run an unlicensed taxi, and then finally hit on "the idea." They will rob an armored car. The usually sardonic tone that one finds in these sorts of films has been softened to a more ironic stance; most of the characters in Palookaville know that the joke of life is on them. They are the rankest of amateurs up against 'the system', but, to their surprise, they discover that the system isn't necessarily any more competent than they are; it simply has more force at its disposal.

(ag) wrote: Almost ten years after seeing this picture for the first time in 2007, I still find that multiple viewing of Zodiac is never an exhaust. This is a criminally underrated movie of all time. It under performed at the box office and was utterly ignored at awards. It does not play out like any serial killer films with vivid horrifying scenes but rather paints the picture with a realistic depiction of how characters involved trying to solve the crime by meticulous investigation. One of Fincher's best films after The Social Network and Fight Club.Verdict: Four stars out of Four (A)
