Ethan P (ca) wrote: 127 Hours is an amalgam of intense feelings and aesthetics. It looks beautiful. It follows a handsome adventurer across breathtaking desert landscapes and is filled with touching flashbacks and his arresting, vivid dreams. Some of his hallucinations are incredible, the beasts running overhead at the end, the orgy in the van during the blizzard, the storm that frees him from the rock. Also the scenes where he reaches his foot into the sunlight and brings the girls to the underground lake are both really cool. That isn't to say the entire film is beautiful, the scene where he cuts off his arm is really bloody and gruesome. It also has a vast emotional range. It begins is harmless and fun, grows hopeless and frustrated, descends into desperation and eventually the story finishes as a pretty powerful exploration of this man's will to live. It's a gripping film with some compelling themes. And for being pinned in a tiny canyon crevice for most of the film with one character, it overcomes a lot of challenges. The director here is brilliant with how he stages the events to keep us from being bored. The first thing is the huge emphasis on time. We feel the tension and despair intensify as time drags on and we see him get more and more nervous. The film also plays with time, traveling back to his childhood and forward into his imagination. A film with so little physical movement or plot needs a few distractions to keep us interested. The flashbacks and hallucinations are awesome just so we get out of the canyon for a few minutes and the film doesn't become stagnant. He also uses some pretty creative editing techniques, by using his camcorder recordings and having three shots play at once at some points. It also has a strong message on life. This man loved life and searched for adventure and in the end, he wanted to live so badly that he cut his arm off to survive. There was only really one performance in the film and therefore it had to be great. It was. James Franco fits the role of fun-loving adventurer and he shows that he's capable of being much more than a goofy stoner. He is dreamy, angry, intelligent and it's awesome to watch him carry the film.

Tatiana C (fr) wrote: Brilliant film! After a slow initial few minutes the film picks up speed and remains a terrifying experience all the way through. It's nice to see an effective modern horror film that doesn't rely on copious gore.

Ryan W (jp) wrote: Way too violent it is predictable and as is the case with every horror remake it focuses on blood and gore and does not pay attention to the story

Alan M (au) wrote: My favorite troma movie. It is fantastic, sick, twisted and gross. Brilliant.

Gavin S (kr) wrote: I remember watching this soon after it came out as a teen, and this was in my Al Pacino is God phase...for what it is, it's actually underrated, performances from Pacino and Cusack especially, but just not a feel good or happy film, and 20 years later, I don't feel compelled to rewatch it...
