The images of 1970s era Los Angeles and the surrounding desert were beautiful, brilliantly composed, and well-chosen but the story about student radicals and tuning in, turning on, and dropping out just didn't have much intellectual heft to it. The style triumphed over substance, gorgeous as that style was.
