Beirut Diaries: Truth, Lies and Videos

By focusing on the experiences of 25-year-old Nadine Zaidan, who was one of the thousands of activists who gathered in Beirut’s Martyrs’ Square in the chaotic days immediately following the assassination of Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri in February of 2005, Beirut Diaries explores critical transformations and crucial questions facing contemporary Lebanon. With this insightful video diary, director Mai Masri chronicles the political ferment embodied in the March 11th Movement, also known as The Cedar Revolution, as people of all factions, ages and religious affiliations passionately debate such issues as Syria’s influence in Lebanese politics, the establishment of an international commission to investigate Hariri’s assassination and the organization of free parliamentary elections.

Dann M (it) wrote: Luc Besson delivers another exciting action-packed adventure with District B13. In a dystopian future where out of control districts of Paris have been walled up and turned over to crime lords a gangster named Taha gets ahold of a nuclear missile, and it's up to an elite police officer to find the missile and disarm it. The action sequences are especially good, particularly the fight choreography. And, they're made even more dynamic and intense with the fast-paced directing style. Incredibly entertaining, District B13 is a high-adrenaline thrill ride.

Michael T (it) wrote: Ah, the cynical 1970s. The United States had lost the war in Vietnam and the American president resigned due to a two-bit burglary carried out by his aides at the Watergate hotel. This film is a byproduct of that period. A faked Mars landing is carried out. Due to a problem with the life support systems (due to the contractor cutting costs to maximize profits) the astronauts would die in space if they were sent out but the President is looking to trim the fat from his budget and if Mission Control scrubs the manned Mars flight, NASA may loose its funding. So the whole thing is faked and our three heroes (James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, and Sam Waterson) are convinced to go along with the ploy when their families are threatened. But when the remote-control module returns from Mars, it disintegrates in the atmosphere and Hal Holbrook and his shadowy masters do not want to explain to the President and Congress why the three heroic astronauts are still alive so they have to die. The three men escape into the desert chased by unmarked helicopter gunships. It hard to watch O.J. in a heroic role but the rest of the cast is pretty good. Elliot Gould plays a heroic reporter (Woodward and Bernstein were still heroes and Fox News hadn't reared its ugly head) who uncovers the truth, Brenda Vaccaro play's Brolin's character's wife, and look for Karen Black and Telly Savalas in bit roles. The film looks good, is exciting, and is well photographed. Unfortunately it fed conspiracy theorists who believe that we never landed anyone on the moon and encouraged writers to write books documenting the "moon-landing hoax." I guess if they hadn't written about that, they would have written books about the Bermuda Triangle. Ah, the cynical 1970s.

Private U (ru) wrote: This was a cute movie. I'd have to be in the mood to watch it again. Definitely a chick flick. They say that women were "beneath" men in the 50s and 60s ... but this movie suggests the exact opposite! Hard to figure out what the plot was. I was like, "o snap so she lives with her parents, and she just met this guy and now they are going to get married?" The man training thing probably works though. I would take life lessons from this movie again!

Doug K (au) wrote: I've heard good things about this film, even if the white boy wants to rap to save his family or gain respect or something doesn't really appeal to me at first glance. I like his music from this movie, but beyond that, I've heard he's a decent actor. Now that he's no longer relevant in music, with no public persona that anyone cares about, maybe its time to appreciate this movie without all the hyped up baggage...

Brian C (es) wrote: Both awful and brilliant at the same time. The acting is bad...very very bad. But the story line itself, and the concepts were amazing. TO think that solving a puzzle box can open gateways to Hell where you experience the utmost in pain and pleasure. But there is no escape. Frank did and thus begins a bloody tale. The only thing that doesn't make any sense was the bum (or is it bone dragon) at the end. That was rather silly. As I said, amazing concept, just poorly executed. Maybe in its day it was great.
