Jay B (de) wrote: Very confused by this film's ridiculously low scores. I mean, it is certainly no masterpiece, but I see blockbusters that are far worse every year. Dumb yourself down slightly and there are some darkly amusing moments to enjoy.

Dore B (nl) wrote: This was a confused film. I read a review by Alex Peterson that takes the filmmaker to task for the lack of coherence between the two narratives and the film's desperate attempt to be "sexy" (the same can be said for the protagonist Antoine, the 40 year old DJ) This is true enough. I also find the "experimentalism" of the film to be cloying. It adds little, but only further muddies the story-line--which is a middle-aged man dumping his wife for a younger woman. The film suggests (though, like the entire film, without confidence) that ultimately the ex-wife must accept her role as mother to her husband and apologize for his leaving her. The second narrative concerning a Parisian mother and her Down Syndrome child carries the emotional weight of this "mother narrative" while the ex-wife makes a connection to this narrative through dreams, drugs and yoga. While I enjoyed watching it I ultimately found it disappointing.

Allison K (br) wrote: Absolutely delightful, silly, stupid, and constant fun, this movie was a perfect parody within a parody. Is it an Oscar-winning blockbuster? Of course not. Is it a perfect low-budget indie romp? You bet. Watch it alone, watch it with your friends, watch it with your parents, watch it with your little siblings. It's a constant good time with so much cheesiness and goofiness to make it the perfect comedy for the person who just wants to have a good time. I am head-over-heels in love with this nonsense.

Dan D (kr) wrote: has its wickedly funny moments, but overall this film's Achilles heel is its poor casting choices. Bierko is on the whole unbearably goofy and Weber is a complete stiff. Had Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld occupied the leading roles, this would have been a considerably better movie. Very typical Larry David humour, but lines aren't executed well. I think it's more enjoyable if you picture the men themselves in these guys' places. Not as terrible as some would have it, though.

Mark C (ca) wrote: Elke Sommer does a great deal of screaming in this fun horror from maestro Bava. Nice visuals as you would expect from Bava. Not his best film but worth seeing none the less.

Andrew M (de) wrote: Phone Booth is a high tension thriller that never has to resort to physical action to be intense. There's an occasional quick burst of action, but a majority of the film's tension comes from the verbal conversation between arrogant publicist Stu Shepherd and the mysterious caller. The film's 81 minute runtime is fast paced, and edited accordingly. The choice of using picture-in-picture edits isn't very aesthetically pleasing, but it works in context of the story. Much of this film's success comes from the two lead performances. Colin Farrell gives a strong performance, and his character transition from selfish and arrogant to emotionally broken and hoping for redemption is played quite beautifully. Kiefer Sutherland is terrifying in a role that only requires his distinct voice, and he certainly has a lot of fun tormenting Farrell's character. Forest Whitaker is a solid supporting presence, but the performances from Radha Mitchell and Katie Holmes are both quite bad (fortunately, the latter have very limited screentime). It's not the deepest film, and the resolution of the story might leave a sense of unfulfillment, but Phone Booth works as a fast paced thrill ride. Bravo, Joel Schumacher.
