Seemed to be thrown together a little bit. Rather interesting idea but could of been made a little better. The part that made the most sense was the ending or how he kept rendering back to the bible to tell his story. If u are looking for a ground breaking script and acting then don't even bother. If u want a action movie with very little story line perfect movie for u

Bottom line, it's better (or I just had more fun with it) than it had any right to be. Though at times perhaps more extreme than what even they put out - Kaufman admits on the DVD intro that if they were to acquire the film today they would have second thoughts - it's a ridiculous, self conscious, sometimes very smart, sometimes (no, practically always) very crude comedy of horrors (or horror of a comedy) that makes its villain a nasty but incredible presence, and some bad acting and mix of good and odd cinematography. Its almost no wonder then this was, I think, the first film acquired for distribution by an at the tome fledgling company called Troma in ny. And yet there's even a scene or two, like when the lead ballerina actress under the spell of the master performs and beats up the theater critic, that do have some non-too-shabby camera shots and lighting, making a delirious mood (a second rate clockwork Orange scene as per directed by an actor that is a second rate Peter Cushing why not). This isn't to say there isn't some convincing gore and body parts flying about, and certainly the preponderance of naked ladies in either total buff or dominatrix get ups makes it bona fide 70s exploitation verging on sexploitation, but so much is done knowing it looks goofy and silly. He makes his lead "Master" (And an actor at that who is having the time of his life playing a pretentious psycho) and cohort little man the real freaks, and in a sense this is almost like an inverted version of Brownings 1932 film: a savage comedy on terrors and horrors, especially in the realm of shady show business (I mean, that IS where all those off-off Broadway actresses go to after all!)A good deal of it is cringe worthy and hard to watch - a tooth extraction scene got to me the most - but so much of it is tongue not so much planted in cheek but sticking out the cheekbone that it's hard to take it seriously. I don't blame anyone who finds this reprehensible trash, but I think why I enjoyed it much as I did - and though it's obviously not laugh-a-minute stuff, there's a very healthy if completely sick sense of humor and absurdity to it all - is that the filmmaker Joel Reed recognizes Its reprehensible trash. With, yknow, flailing limbs and screaming stark naked women and ravenous pieces of flesh. This is a freak show (as the title posits), but it's also, primarily, a satire on backstage dramas, complete with the melodramatic slave-driving (and in this case that's not too figurative!) director who wants to put something spectacular on stage but has to put up with the drama of putting it together. All of this could very easily devolve into a Hershell Gordon Lewis debacle and be tasteless with only the freak show element to it. I think when dealing with such a cinematic tableau as Blood Sucking Freaks, with its fiendish goateed midget, s & m and torture, cheekily done decapitation, dismemberment and torture, cannibalism on the verge of an outbreak of the living dead and sexual humiliation, the framing counts

rk Walker. Both of their work seems to mirror and compliment one another and this became the birthing of one of cinema's greatest, long term, partnerships. His improvisation and natural ability does, in front of the camera, what Scorsese was doing behind it. As this proved to be the moment that Scorsese came to everyone's attention, it done the same for DeNiro. There's not a moment where he doesn't command your attention with his maniacal and random fits of rage and immaturity. Even though Keitel delivers a solid lead performance, it's DeNiro's recklessness that really stands out. He struggles with the choices he makes in life and struggles even more with those of his self-destructive friend, Johnny Boy, played with real electric verve by a young DeNiro. At it's core, it's anchored by two excellent performances: Keitel shoulders the brunt of the film's narrative as Charlie; basically a good guy who has chosen a life of crime that leaves him in a tortured state due to his religious upbringing and near constant state of catholic guilt. They're not throwing elaborately expensive weddings or severing horse's heads to send messages, they're just trying to get by, day to day, and turn a coin from whatever petty criminal activity comes their way. The characters in Scorsese's tale are more real and easier to identify with. It feels raw, even claustrophobic, when compared to Coppola's epic proportions. Following on the heals of Francis Ford Coppola's sweeping crime classic The Godfather in 1972, Scorsese took us to a more personal, working class criminal environment. That said, when you look back at Mean Streets and consider just how early Scorsese delivered this, it still packs a punch and is, without doubt, one of the best and most impressive films from the decade. This was a young, relatively inexperienced director who was way ahead of his time and displayed approaches to filmmaking that are now taken for granted. Some may find the style and fashion of this early 70's classic as dated but Scorsese's flamboyant skills and style are far from it. However, his religious beliefs continually cause him to question his choices in life and as his conscience gets the better of him, so too does his misjudged loyalty to his low-life friends. Charlie (Harvey Keitel) is a small time criminal trying to work his way up the local mafia food chain. Quite simply, Mean Streets showcased the talents of Scorsese and fully confirmed the arrival of one of the greatest American directors while becoming hugely influential on future films and filmmakers alike. He'd already done Who's That Knocking at My Door in 1968 and Boxcar Bertha in 1972 but this was the film that not only began his illustrious collaborations with Robert DeNiro but it was his first film to delve into the gangster sub-genre and displayed all the embryonic, stylistic trademarks that he has now become synonymous with. Although Mean Streets wasn't Martin Scorsese's directorial debut it can often feel like it was

A brilliant thriller that I say should of got a fresh rating, Walken and Depp are as brilliant as usual and I know they spent a few seconds together in Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow but I hope Johnny and Chris do more movie collaborations in the nearest future
