Besieged City

Ling-Kit HO is just like one of many other students in Tin Shui Wai. However, he is a lot more hard-working than all the others as he wants to get away from this besieged city. Apart from his study, he is indifferent to everything because he comes from a defunct family. Having to take care of his mentally-ill mother, Ling Kit is also forced to face his Dad – a heavy drunker and a heavy gambler. His younger brother Chun-Kit has left the family for years. At that time, Chun-Kit was heavily bullied by his classmates in school and he was always beaten by his drunken father. Being the elder brother, however, Ling-Kit did not protect Chun-Kit from being beaten so Chun-Kit left in great panic.

Alex r (gb) wrote: Pretty good low budget horror film, Asylum Blackout is an inventive film, one that takes an interesting approach to a familiar formula. The film is not perfect, but it does rely on some impressive performances, and good moments of thrills. If you're looking for a surprising horror film, then Asylum Blackout may provide what you're looking for. The idea is simple, yet effective enough to keep you entertained from start to finish. The cast do a good job in their performances, and what I enjoyed about the story was that it featured a bunch people trapped with lunatics in an asylum and they try to survive the night. Easy, simplistic and to the point, this film doesn't try to overdo anything. Some of the best horror films use simplistic ideas to tell an awesome, memorable story. T hew film could have been better, but for what it is, it's a pretty good effort that delivers an entertaining hour and a half of jolts. Fans looking for creative horror films will enjoy this film, and as a fan of these types of horror films, Asylum Blackout is a treat. I really love horror films set in asylums, haunted old buildings and abandoned hospitals that have a dark past. However with this one, it takes the setting of an asylum and adds a survival situation to make it a good horror film. Sure there are aspects that could have been improved upon, but this is still worth seeing if you love these types of horror films. As far as low budget horror films are concerned, Asylum Blackout is far better than the most mainstream horror films. If you're tired of remakes and dull, unimpressive genre films, then this will most likely satisfy you.

The Algonquin Round Table was another artistic scene (like the Worhol studios, 1960's Height-Ashbury district, ect.) where the scene was as important as any art it might create. But at least this film shows that some real work got done. Typically film biographies of artists short change the creative process for the sake of showing the glamour. I'm often left wondering how the artist got anything done to be famous for. But Here I truely felt like I was seeing the life and times of Dorothy Parker and her contemporaries. Hitorical context and perspective is well handled. The historical figures are shown in both a good and bad light. It's even pointed out that Fitzgerald and Hemingway had to leave New York to be more productive. The performances are kept real and unsentemental. Directer Rudolph does an excellent job keeping everything focused. Parker fans will enjoy it, others should at least find it interesting. Keep your eyes open for an unbilled cameo by Cyndi Lauper, whose 20's era looks and New York accent blend her in perfectly.

Hero Taylor is brash, cold and unlikable; Brown is saintly to the point of being unbelievable; Carsten's Nazi depiction is off-the-wall without being funny or campy; while Mimieux has nothing to do but show she's a white woman with blonde hair. It concludes with a bizarre plot devise aimed at making a moral point that frankly escapes me and is too fantastic to believe, anyhow.
