However, the acting was good, hot guys, and it was just a fun gay flick. Yes Another Gay movie is your cliche gay flick with an American Pie touch to it

The animation was probably nothing to write home about even in 1977, and its integration into the live action is far less seamless than what had come before in "Mary Poppins" (1964, mind you!) and what would come again in the future. For example, the love song Pete sings to his dragon at the beginning manages to be both generic and awkward, sounding exactly like something that would appear in the middle of a musical romance. Surprisingly few of them have anything to do with the matters at hand, and could easily have been rejects from other musicals. The songs are not only boring, but go on twice as long as they should, since almost all of them have interludes. Unfortunately, not much good can be said for any other element of the movie. Shelley Winters and Jim Dale are entertaining in way over-the-top roles, and Mickey Rooney gives an enjoyable performance as a Disnified alcoholic. Helen Reddy brings a sly intensity to her performance, elevating it above what is actually written. A throwaway Disney film, "Pete's Dragon" is distinguished only by strong performances from its adult cast

This is the first movie I've seen that dealt with the Jewish mob which is the source of most of the humor. Zahn, Rockwell, & Giamatti all do a terrific job, but it felt like several important scenes were cut out. This is an odd comedy with an all star cast

All in all, pretty average. The movie was a little slow for my tastes -- certainly not what I think of when I think of the stage show or the recent movie musical. Another draw for me was Rogers, who I'm also a huge fan of (albeit usually when paired with Astaire). Like most people I think I saw this because I'm a fan of the musical Chicago

Still. Great movie. 140919: Had to watch this film again as I had the opportunity to shoot a Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 PU recently. One kill at a time. Cool. Snipers

Unlike the barely concealed egotism of Garden State, the camera is also far more critical of its central character's angst- you're not always being asked to like the lonesome Jim, or identify with him - which, ultimately, is why you will. Shark, Jim's flaws are a little more based in reality: intelligent and appallingly self involved, selfish and self-defeating. Unlike the more stylised protagonists of Napoleon Dynamite, or Eagle Vs. When he gives his incarcerated mother his favourite book, telling her it's about "an impotent man's futile love" part of you is laughing at your teenage self as well. Lonesome Jim's sense of humour is ultimately what sets it apart: self aware without the smugness that dogs this genre, Jim is the butt of jokes that ultimately serve to humanise him. Much of the humour is derived from the darker tone that this sets, and the film contains a number of laugh out-loud moments. In it, Affleck openly steals from his generously doting mother, callously incites his brother to attempt suicide and stoicly refuses to do much learning or growing throughout the film. In fact, its unappealing protagonist might have something to do with setting Lonesome Jim ahead of the pack- this film has the guts to go the whole hog and have an at times genuinely nasty central character. Surprisingly compelling despite its alienating protagonist, the pacing of the film doesn't drag, and contains a restraint throughout that lends it a certain sense of subtlety. Although dangerously close to the plots of other indie flicks like Garden State, it would be a mistake to dismiss Lonesome Jim for its unoriginal premise. Formula: disaffected protagonist is forced to leave big city for rural/suburban roots, is miserable, meets quirky female, learns big life lesson, finally cheers up. He starts coaching his brother's basketball team, and meets a sunny-natured nurse played by Liv Tyler, who inexplicably takes a shine to the unrelentingly rude and awkward Affleck. He's forced into taking on his brother's factory job, when the latter falls into a coma after a failed suicide attempt. Casey Affleck plays laconic failed writer Jim, who leaves New York for his rural home town when he runs out of money. You know the type; easy for lazy critics to label "quirky" and "off-beat" because of sparse dialogue and misfit protagonists, these films often fall into the trap of doing little to earn their description as a 'comedy'. Lonesome Jim is of that growing genre of indie flicks that follow an all-too-familiar formula

Don't take it seriously and you will have a good time. Tony Scott infuses his usual stylish visual into "Days of Thunder", and the result is energetic fun. A cheesy guilty-pleasure filled with the late 80's music and formulaic characters
