Adam R (ag) wrote: The return of Indiana Jones is unfortunately a less than spectacular wet fart. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is ultimately a fun but lacking, disposable film. There are certainly things to enjoy here. Once again, the action scenes are creative and interesting, even if they are overly reliant on CGI. Harrison Ford and Karen Allen return and revive some of their chemistry from the first movie. The rest of the cast is also pretty great. Shia LaBeouf, whatever your opinions on him are as a person, can be a damn good actor when he needs to be and this movie is elevated by his performance. He manages to bring a genuine vulnerability to his tough guy persona that's very endearing. Special mention should also go to Cate Blanchett as Soviet spy Irina Spalko. Hamming it up but also injecting a true sense of menace, she creates, I believe, the most memorable villain in the franchise. One of the two biggest issues with this movie stems from the overall story. The choice to set it in the late 1950s and have Indy fight the Soviets is a novel idea worth exploring. Plus it conveniently matches Harrison Ford's actual age. Where it begins to stumble is with the alien plot. Kingdom has two distinct styles (swashbuckling adventure serial and science fiction B-movie) going on at once which, more often than not, clash in a very blunt and awkward way. Indy, with his usual look and speech, feels very out of place in this story and it's very distracting. If the filmmakers had commented on this a bit then it might have worked but it's played mostly straight so it tends to fall short. The other major issue is the overall "tiredness" of the whole production. This isn't to do with the actors but more with the directing and technical feel of it. Steven Spielberg reportedly didn't want to make this movie and it shows through his flat directing and overuse of CGI effects, although I have a sneaking suspicion the latter was George Lucas's doing. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is not a bad movie by any means but it's certainly a disappointment. You can check it out and have a good time but don't expect anything worth writing home about.

Benjamin J (au) wrote: Shit. Considering one of the reviews under this complains that there were "no rape scenes", you can tell the audience they aimed at and disappointed (it's currently on my TV and I'm telling you how shit it is before it's finished). One more in a long line of truly awful biopics of serial killers. I'm yet to see a good one.

Tim R (it) wrote: This was a great movie, a little off beat, but the manga additions were a nice taste.

Red Sonia Scorpion Princess (es) wrote: Caught this one on HBO around 3am. The plot of this movie was so laughably implausible that I began to enjoy it simply because of how ridiculous it was. So many holes in the plot, so many completely unbelievable plot twists that by the end you will be laughing inside.

ka m (es) wrote: Great premise and with so many people involved that I like, I really wanted to like the sum of the parts as well. Unfortunately, like the song MacArthur Park, it's just un-necessarily complicated for the sake of it.

Wesley W (it) wrote: Not really as bad as critics think it is. In my opinion, the consensus isn't very good because it only says that this isn't good because it is too similar to other films and that wasn't really what the problem was here. I like 50 cent's music but several parts of his story here just wasn't interesting enough to make us care about what was going on half of the time. The film also wasn't very memorable or rewatchable. At first 50 Cent's acting wasn't very good but I thought he got a little better as the movie progressed. Terrence Howard gave a good performance here and he add humanity in the scenes he was in. Therefore, this film wasn't 16% bad, it was just an average drama that had good parts, but in the end, it isn't something that you will beg to see again after it is over.
