(jp) wrote: Review In short: "Get over yourself" This is a cast of NYC characters spewing the most overblown, preachy yet angst-ridden, and ultimately dull dialogue ever. It is NOT the valentine to the tiny perfect snow globe of a city the director is aiming for. A brainy Jewish professor of philosophy who has NEVER left his upper east (west?) side village enclave to experience the real world in 34 years? (Think of Fargo's airport hotel restaurant scene as real 'reality'). A black, drug ridden (yet brilliant Amherst educated) man who quotes philosophers in the corner store, is in so much pain (which is never explained) that he refuses all help. The alcoholic, brilliant, pretty white moms who give up corporate life in the big apple to raise too-wise kids and snark at each other? The standard cheater husband who learns his lesson? Kirsten Stewart is the perfect self abusing grad student choking out her brilliant pain. I can't see this film as a jewel it was intended to be, it just feels stuffy. Planting cabbages indeed. Rex Reed's review is perfect.
