(nl) wrote: It's not necessary to be a "cynical knucklehead," as one soggy reviewer suggested, to dislike this incredibly artificial and manipulative TV-movie fiasco not even worthy of a Hallmark channel offering. It is positively NOT "sweet" or "charming" unless you're a hopelessly detached adolescent. It's cheesy, sentimental and totally unrealistic in every way. Yes, I admit I gave up early, but it was obvious the movie was not going to get more complex or sophisticated. Even the normally respectable Diane Lane is cringe-worthy here, straining in her facial expressions and her "emoting" as if the director asked her to treat it as a melodrama in the theater where people can't see your expressions close-up. The first few scenes are laughably bad and edited with hedge clippers, skipping the marriage dissolution and divorce travesty in about five minutes or less. In short, this film is horrible, phony tripe.

(gb) wrote: A pair of surfers go out to surf amongst the sharks as it will be mega coooool. However, it isn't the sharks they should be worried about. OMG! Blood Surf borders on parody at times, but doesn't really sink it's teeth into it's own campy charm until the end. The end sees two girls taunting a crocodile by brandishing their breasts and shouting "Fuck You". With the absolute heartlessness they shrug off the death of a friend, just because he was a coward (or smart) you have to wonder what effect the writers were aiming for. Some of the deaths are hilarious, the effects are hokey and it has an electric guitar surfer score, that fits the surfing but not the horror. Good stuff, if a little confused at times.
(jp) wrote: Considered by many as a misfire from the great David Cronenberg this is in fact a wonderful film that stands with the best of the directors' work.Jeremy Irons and John Lone are excellent in the leads and the film looks great. The story is very interesting also and it all builds to a rather moving conclusion.A highly underrated gem.

(gb) wrote: Yep, this bed's gastric juices bubble with digestive excitement every time someone plops down on it. In the strange world of B-movie horror, even this is a marvelous oddity. The equivalent of a child's fanciful, monsters-in-the-closet imagination running wild and naked through Barry's uncensored libido.

First off, the chemistry between Oldman and Penn is just amazing. Harris and Wright are on top of their game as well. The movie is shot beautifully and the New York setting and score by Ennio Morricone gives it a unique feel to it. The unoriginal story is the only negative really. I wish more people knew about this movie.
