The story itself, while not terribly complicated, is extreamly well told and holds some really creative and sometimes bizzare moments that make me believe that the movie couldnt have been made in a better way.

Satoshi Kon seamlessly blends the actress's life with the movies she starred in; even the framing device of her telling her life story to a documentary director and his cameraman starts to bleed into the story. Satoshi Kon does what he does best and makes you forget your watching an anime.

Bardem is magnificent as the lead, the soundtrack is so beautiful that I purchased it just to listen to it alone and the clever cameos by Johnny Depp are a treat. This film touches the heart of what it is to be an artist, especially one living through the toughest of conditions.

At least "terrible" has the potential to be interesting....Also it was a liiittle creepy at times. Not the concept (I don't have a problem with the whole "May December" thing), just the execution.
(gb) wrote: Stephen Fry is perfectly cast as Oscar Wilde (there really is no one else I could imagine playing this role so well) but aside from that, this biopic falls a bit flat. It focuses almost entirely on the playwright's sexuality, without ever really exploring, for example, how he felt about his art. As such, the character is only drawn in reference to his relationships with others, and is never fleshed out as his own person. Acceptable, but disappointing.

(gb) wrote: First off, I hate it when they characters are supposed to be speaking in a foreign language and they just speak English with an attempt at that country(TM)s accent. This movie doesn(TM)t even try that, though its funny to hear a bunch of people with a British accent. Truly an 80(TM)s flick right down to the James Horner score (sound familiar? It should, he did Commando and 48 hrs. which had a very similar score the guy loves steel drums). There wasn(TM)t too much of a twist at the end, but it was good cold war era stuff. Just wondering why William Hurt didn(TM)t like to pull out his gun too much. Didn(TM)t even know if he carried one half way through the flick!

(ru) wrote: In 1995, I would have been insanely embarrassed to have been responsible for this movie. In 2017, I could (and I do as a viewer) appreciate how hilarious it is. There were actually some moments that made me wonder if they were doing a parody of themselves. It's possibly, however unlikely, in which case there was some comic genius involved. It's bad. It's not so bad that it's good, but it is bad enough to be worth watching for several good laughs. The plot and the casting make most of the film seem like a joke that is being made on purpose. Sonya is laughably athletic, at best, with only one fight that is embarrassing to watch. Kitana is an emotionless and plot-moving only character. Liu Kang and Sub-Zero are the only people who actually look like they know martial arts. Raiden and Johnny Cage are the best (because of how funny they turn out to be) characters, and are involved in most of the examples that make it seem like the movie knows it's a joke. However, they don't quite take it far enough to fully convince on that.
