Harry W (es) wrote: Mel Brook affectionate homage to Silent Films is ripe with lots of clever slapstick laughs and a loveable cast, in terms of its lead actors and its celebrity satire.Silent Movie captures the charm of a silent film as good as even a Charlie Chaplin movie, with the same amount of slapstick excellence and hilarity. But with Mel Brooks as a director, it's ensured that the humour is taken one step further, and goes into an exploration of celebrity satire. Burt Reynolds, James Caan, Anne Bancroft, Liza Minelli and Paul Newman all bring their own into their moments and provide a hilarious level of laughs for the audience, as well as the usual hilarious leads from Mel Brooks, Dom Deluise and Marty Feldman who create a dynamic comedic trio for the audience.Silent Movie is a fresh display of physical comedy and is never reliant on dialogue but rather just some good old fashioned physicality which in comparison to today's comedy is a lot smarter, and even the one word of dialogue grouch out the whole story is made hilarious by the clever work of Mel Brooks. It's practically a true story being told with a lot of slapstick physical humour, and that is honestly nothing but a whole lot of fun, so all in all Silent Movie is another hilarious and clever film to add to Mel Brooks' list of success, and definitely worth a checkout if you're looking at silent films.

Even given the subject matter, It walks a fine line between genres and never really reaches it's potential of becoming a patronizing tear-jerker, which is a GREAT thing. Hoffman and Streep are at their best here. I really liked the father and son scenes. It goes a little downhill once we get into the courtroom scenes... they are a little predictable.

It's definitely a film that I grew up on and I gotta say that Tom Holland and Don Mancini did a fantastic job on trying to show the world what they could bring into the horror genre.
