Doesn't feel that original - I keptthinking of 2001 A Space Odyssey, even though the plots aren't thatsimilar on the surface. However, there was a still fair bit of potential for something entertaining and/or novel.Entertainment is light and novelty is minimal. It just feels like a paint-by-numbers space adventure. Nothing new, nothing really exciting.Add in some flat and/or unconvincing performances and it is a so-somovie. We know Jerry O'Connell can't act, and Gary Sinese tends tooveract, but I would have expected better from Tim Robbins and DonCheadle. Then again, being serious dramatic actors, they were miscast. Connie Nielsen is the most convincing of the lot.Add in some flat and/or unconvincing performances and it is a so-so movie. In the first seven minutes, we get to see perfect parodies of (about half of) the types of annoying guys you don't want bothering you at the club - the drugged out ex-stripper, the blunt troll, the slick-lookin guy who just wants a sleazy unsafe threeway. From there, the film derails into normal dramedy territory, occasionally surfacing to visit a piano bar, an all night New York diner, an audition room, a contested fuck space. I read this movie best described as a "fever dream piece". Our lead is a cute naive-lookin young Broadway writer who picks up a suave overconfident stripper on the subway and spends the whole night trying unsuccessfully to find a hookup space. It's got its moments of sweetness and genuine feeling, always rare for a romance comedy. It's almost too shocking how much Tori Spelling looks like Miss Coco Peru.

Luke T (ru) wrote: In this very popular comedy aimed at teenagers directed by Gil Junger, a student (Julia Stiles) is furious to discover her prom date (Heath Ledger) was bribed by her sister to invite her. But confusion reigns when he then falls for her.Stiles gives a very good performance in her role as Kat, while Ledger is superb in his role as Patrick, and this would be his breakthrough role, meaning he would be one actor to look out for in the future because on this occasion he suits the role very well. There is good support to be had from Larisa Oleynik as Bianca, Stiles' sister who sets the arrangement up.Junger's direction is very solid throughout and there are some really funny moments to be had, but the main thing is that the movie is funny all the way through. If you are a fan of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, which itself was made into a movie starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, this you should end up liking this film. I did, because I consider it to be very funny, charming and pleasant to view.

Ahmed M (ru) wrote: The Spectacular Now is a good movie with a nice story and pretty good performances. But, it feels like a let down due to a few coming-of-age cliches(and to its defense, it avoids them quite a lot and as much as it can), and an ending which could've been better.
