Broken Vessels

A young Pennsylvania man moves to Los Angeles to begin work for an ambulance service. There he is teamed with a supremely confident vet who seemingly has gone through a large number of partners. Initially the novice is awed by the more experienced man's capabilities to deal with the high pressure situations they encounter. However, gradually he discovers that all is not as it seems. While the vet is ice on the surface, he actually gets through the ordeals by heavy drug use and avoids commitments. Soon the younger man finds himself pulled into the same world and has to decide what direction he wants to take.

Sophie B (it) wrote: This is definitely something more reserved for the 'higher-thinkers' or 'artists' amongst us. I appreciate what the director intended to do and what she has done, however for me personally, it didn't make a great film. I didn't really like any of the characters too much (except Edward and Rose) and when, towards the end of the film, I see a close up of one of the main characters and don't recognize her, there's a problem. I presume the constant static wide and long shots that capture the whole scene rather than cutting between different shots is supposed to represent some sort of fly on the wall Italian neorealism but I just didn't like it. At times it as great and really fueled the tension and awkwardness of what was happening, but at other times I almost screamed for closer shots. Not something I'd watch or even mention again.

Evangelos C (nl) wrote: 'Mr. Nobody' is one of those unusual movies that sink deeply in your head with a dose of fantasy and science, as well as thoughts for the future. Its romantic, surreal and existential approach will likely make your brain cogs spin vividly for a while. It is an excellent choice for imaginative folks who like to get lost in thought, or those who need a fresh, inspirational breeze. And yet the audience expands with the realistic drama that is woven into the film, and the broad range of people of many types and ages it deals with. The direction is pristine and extraordinarily imaginative and playful, giving a bizarre, rejuvenating taste to a series of otherwise everyday situations, just as the story demands to distinguish itself. A great and unique title, 'Mr. Nobody' is a potent and intriguing contemporary film that is certainly worth a watch.

Darryl S (ag) wrote: Truly a difficult film to like as the protagonist of this harsh character study acts as an antagonist from start to tragic finish. There's so little to like about this gal; however, there is something quite mesmerizing knowing that Ms. Bonnaire is merely an "actress" portraying the character Mona. You'd think you were actually viewing this as a documentary of one person's tragedy! The opening scenes pretty much set the stage for this bleak tale; nevertheless, to see how this person ended up as shown at the start is quite fascinating. I think we all may have known (or encountered) a person such as she in our self-contained lives....

Lorelei A (au) wrote: This is very theatrical. It's mainly dialogue. I can't imagine that it would appeal to many people. However for an evocation of a dominant female, this film must have been very subversive when it was released. The value is in the peculiar mind set that produced it. You couldn't find that today. If you liked Irina Spalko, this film is bound to be dangerous for you.

Vic E (ru) wrote: An enjoyable minor Lang film with a good but implausible story that has enough suspense to keep you interested. Having seen many of Lang's influences on Hitchcock, it was intriguing to see Lang imitating Hitchcock. I wonder if the direct references to REBECCA and SPELLBOUND were meant as a spoof?

Kenna M (ru) wrote: The Ones Below, written and directed by David Farr, is an intense psychological thriller. The movie features really good acting and the suspense keeps the movie flowing intensely. The movie stars Clmence Pos, best known for playing Fleur in Harry Potter, David Morrissey, Stephen Campbell Moore and Laura Birn. The British movie is really intense and ideal for those who appreciate a thriller with gripping fear.
