It's isn't hard-core pornography, but it isn't a regular commercial film either. It's something in between, which means it is kind of in a disappointing no man's land. I'd place it more with The Story of O than with In the Realm of the Senses or Caligula. In the realm of the Senses is still the high water mark for me when it comes to pornographic commercial releases, as it has both the sex and the story. Caligula isn't bad either. This really isn't worth watching, which is very disappointing because he's made some amazing films. The Killer Inside Me is my favorite, but Tristram Shandy and A Mighty Heart are both excellent as well. Sadly, I still haven't seen 24 Hour Party People. The concert scenes are pretty much throwaway and the sex scenes, while they are genuine real life sex, leave something to be desired, both in terms of their aesthetic and erotic appeal and in terms of character development. What I really hate are all the ignorant and/or idiotic professional film critics out there that seem to think the film industry didn't exist before they started writing about it (i.e. they make ridiculous and misleading comments regarding the originality of the concept of depicting actual sex on screen).

(ag) wrote: One of my favourite movies of all time- low-key funny in how real it is, the two leads are beyond words (especially Winslet) so that the pretty good supporting cast almost fades in comparison (but not quite) and the direction and cinematography are pitch-perfect and endlessly creative in translating an admittedly out-there set-up to a visual medium. This set-up is carried by a script that is sheer brilliance, juggling narrative complexity and heavy themes such as identity, loss and acceptance with a human love story by precise construction to make the film immediately accessible despite the mountain of complexity to climb.
