Bruiser is the story of a man who has always tried to fit in. He keeps his mouth shut, follows the rules, and does what he's supposed to do. But one morning, he wakes up to find his face is gone. All the years of acquiescence have cost him the one thing he can't replace: his identity. Now he's a blank, outside as well as in, an anonymous, featureless phantom. Bent on exacting revenge, he explodes. He isn't going to follow the rules anymore.

Not is it just a beacon of hope and self empowerment, it is also a reminder of how far off we have gone from what our forefathers had originally dreamed of and worked and sacrificed their lives to create. It fills me with guilt to see what catastrophes we have created for ourselves and put the dreams of our forefathers to shame. The plot of this movie is incredible, not only does it maintain a neutral perspective, showing Hindus, Muslims and the British in a negative light some part of the film but it also provides us with an admirable perspective of us all. The acting is incredible and special praise goes to Christopher Lee for a magnificent and a solid performance. The film also takes on to a lighter side with occasionally funny remarks and admirable qualities of Jinnah. This movie is a true masterpiece which no other of its likes can be compared to.

It's a horror spoof, but not a particularly brilliant one. However, there's enough on display in this movie to make it charming and enjoyable. Directed by cult director Jim Wynorski and starring Robert Vaughn, Angus Scrimm and Playboy Playmate Teri Copley, it takes on just about every horror franchise out there. That is, all that it can fit into its 90 minute running time. There's plenty of stuff in the background to find, and there's also an appearance by Forrest J. Ackerman. There's also The Tall Man (naturally), Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, Pinhead, Dracula, and even a cameo by Boris Karloff (using footage from The Terror). It's a fun little movie in the vein of something like Saturday the 14th, Ghost Fever or Transylvania 6-5000. It also pre-dates the meta horror genre by several years, as well. It won't blow you away, but it's enjoyable at least.
(ag) wrote: Tim Roth gives an incredible debut performance here. This film centers around a 16 year old skinhead and juvenile delinquint who enjoys throwing bricks through immigrants windows, stealing cars, huffing glue and fucking with the authorities. I suspect that this movie was trying to say more about the correctional system in Britain at that time, than about makjing a comment on youth cultures, as the fact that Roths character happens to be a skinhead is almost besides the point. The characters complete disregard for his own future are do to his attempts and living outside of the system that is laid out before him. While he does seem to be a racist I'm not sure how commited he is to this ideology as his actions seem to be an attempt on his part to break out of the routine of school, work, family, god, queen, country etc. Anyways a very grim character study with terrific performances, the standout being Tim Roth. Definently recommended.
(es) wrote: Moretz is a great actress, but neither her nor Bettis and not even Spacek are ugly enough to portray Carrie. She was written to be a fat, ugly outcast. None of them would have been outsiders; Moretz was beautiful at prom! Another thing - this adaptation shouldn't have been modernized. The 70s film brings on a sort of rawness; posting Carrie on YouTube almost belittles the story.

This bizarre take on politics is structurally snappy and provides what is more like a string with intersections of skits and banter, sprinkled with sarcastic yet charming undertones. There is, of course, no actual deep meaning to this straight forward affair, but the almost continuous spread of warm entertainment is comfort food for the mind.

Even in the worst Van Damme movie, he delivered. I ended watching him more as the villain than JCVD the herO in THE SHEPARD because his stunts were extremely impressive. I can't wait for him to be taken seriously in a martial arts film. As I watch movies like SAFE HOUSE, looking at Ryan Reynolds during the fight scenes, I ask myself, "where is Scott Adkins when you REALLY need him?" No disrespect to Ryan, who is a great actor, but when it comes to physical fight scenes, he will always get my Oscar for fight choreography. Cant' wait to watch this movie late tonight on cable, since I just read the TV grid for tonight. For pure martial arts fans, (as we already know) the worst movies have great martial arts when real fighters are in them. And I know he will deliver.
